Use the Difficulty: Reflections on Leadership
Last Friday, I had the rare privilege of being a guest in my own community, The Curious Mindset. It allowed me to reflect deeply on one of my guiding principles, inspired by the legendary Michael Caine. His simple but profound philosophy, "Use the difficulty," has been a cornerstone in my journey.
A Lesson from Michael Caine
Michael Caine shared this invaluable lesson during an interview with Parkinson. While rehearsing a play as a young actor, he found himself in a tricky situation: a chair had been thrown during an improvised scene and lodged in the doorway he was supposed to enter. When he hesitated, unsure how to proceed, the director told him:
"Use the difficulty. If it’s a comedy, fall over it. If it’s a drama, pick it up and smash it."
This advice became his life philosophy. No matter how bad a situation seemed, he’d find a way to turn it into an advantage, even if just by a fraction. As Michael Caine said, “There’s never anything so bad that you cannot use that difficulty.”
My Own Story of Using the Difficulty
Between 2019 and 2020, in the space of 6 months, I faced the loss of both my parents. And just as I began to process the grief, the world entered lockdown in March 2020. It was a period of overwhelming challenges, yet it also became the catalyst for something transformative. I channelled the isolation and the difficulty into creating The Curious Mindset community.
The Curious Mindset was born to help technology leaders become the best versions of themselves. This community grew from my experience and desire to help others overcome the challenges I faced when I became a leader. Through this community, we inspire leaders to:
What started as a seed of an idea during one of the most challenging times in my life has grown into a thriving space where technology leaders grow, share, and support one another.

Reflecting on the Year
As 2024 draws to a close, I’m reminded of how powerful this principle is. Challenges will always arise, but how we respond to them defines our path. Whether in your personal life or your leadership journey, there is always a way to use the difficulty. Sometimes, it’s about falling over the metaphorical chair; other times, it’s about picking it up and smashing it to pieces.
