Watch Out for the 'Break' Break!

Watch Out for the 'Break' Break!

You go on holiday after a tough run up at work, or in life, looking for a rest and a recharge, and you go down with a cold, more severe bug, or at worse have a full breakdown soon after arriving there! Why?

I use this picture in my Corporate Lunch and Learn Talks and One-to-One Coaching Sessions to demonstrate how the brain and body can hit Ctrl/Alt/Delete when stimulus and impetus drops.

Both teams are elite athletes, probably with years of training behind them, and an intensive physical training regime in the run up to the race. Both teams have done the same race, exerting the same energy and passion, and one has won, and the other has lost. You can work out which way round.

The team that won has the adrenaline and dopamine pumping after snatching victory, so they still have the chemical and mental stimulus to push on, most probably through the day and night!

But by rights their bodies and brains should be reacting the same as the losing team that doesn't have the same stimulus and impetus! They are spent, they both should be spent!

This is what can happen to all of us when we lose our stimulus and impetus for whatever reason. And if we have been pushing hard in the run up to whatever break we take, or worse still we have been pushing too hard for a long period of time, beyond our natural breaking point, when we do rest, we break!

So it's vitally important to watch out for the 'Break' Break and prepare for it. Make sure you build the best relationship with the 15 Drivers of Human Comfort and Distress at all times, but especially in the run up to any relaxing break. That's it. Be mindful that a break could be round the corner and prepare for it by getting yourself in the best state of mental fitness and resilience.

Better still, always endeavour to have the best relationship with the 15 Drivers of Human Comfort and Distress by joining the FREE Burnout Beater Community. See you in there for chat, learning and training.

It has happened to me so many times before! Getting depressed, feeling like I don’t enjoy being unproductive, wondering why I went on holidays at first place, feeling like I don’t deserve the break - it’s a toxic trait and changing these feelings starts with awareness

This used to happen to me previously… I’d go on a holiday only to find myself coming down with a heavy cold!  It’s taught me not to run on an empty battery!  Important share, especially during these summer months.

Couldn't agree more! Continuous looking out for yourself can support you having a valuable and restful break rather than coming back to work needing another break!
