What does AIMING FOR EXCELLENCE look like?
My sign off is AIMING FOR EXCELLENCE - It was a motto given to me by my Nan when I was 17 - It is something I aim to live by both in work and personal life. I remember asking Nan in the 1980s who do you think achieves EXCELLENCE - without hesitation Nan said JIMMY LITTLE. She told me how professional he was, how he succeeded against the odds and how he was always true to himself. In 2005 I had the opportunity to have Uncle Jimmy Little perform at our second Scholarship awards for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence at the ABC, this was an opportunity to bring together many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who exemplify everything that ALL Australians should aim for. I was aware of Uncle Jimmy's music but to meet him was an honour and a privelege. His performance was more than music and his presence lit up the event - a gentlemen, consumate professional and ambassador. I am inspired by many people but the picture attached is 3 incredible Aboriginal people who have given so much - my Grandparents and Uncle Jimmy Little. I was lucky enough to have many more meetings with the great Uncle Jimmy Little and I know for my Nan the event was a very significant moment and she didn't forget the message she gave in in the 1980s - "Paul I told you - how magnificent is Jimmy Little!"
The performance and event helped cement an important initiative at the ABC. It was a very special day and one that gave me something more to aim for. Uncle Jimmy Little and my Nan together in one room - Aboriginal excellence at its best!
To succeed in the future we need to be aware of the past - Uncle Jimmy Little and Nan have since passed away but their message and impact will be felt for generations to come!
Uncle was and is an inspiration to many people..One of my biggest Mentors!
