When You Share in the First Person You Will Connect Like Never Before
Your experiences are the most valuable messages you have to offer. How you share them will determine your effectiveness in reaching your audience. Here's a million-dollar tip that took me a while to discover.
Years ago I had a friend who argued that only a few people are capable of a TED-worthy talk. I, however, believe that everyone can become TED-worthy. Some are close to it, others are further away, and a few don't even know they have one inside. But, with work, anyone can give a captivating, meaningful, TED-worthy talk.
My friend sent me links to some cringe-worthy TEDx talks. They were painful to watch, and there were times I thought he might be right. But then, as I was coaching a speaker for TEDxPacificPalisades, she said, "I learned YOU have to relax..." and several of the terrible TEDx talks flashed through my head as I realized something significant.
"Try that whole section again," I said, "but this time, instead of saying 'I learned YOU have to relax," say, 'I learned I have to relax'..." Her use of the first person in that way made her talk come alive!
We both realized that "we need to own our experiences." Instead of saying, "I learned YOU need to..." I now say, "I learned I need to..." It will take effort to catch yourself (at first), but it will put you on the road to being TED-Worthy and really connecting with your listeners. Check the video and try it out!
