Who says we can't have fun with a "House For Lease" ad with a Keith Richards Deck.

(I'm leasing out a house in Austin, Texas, and I've taken to the habit of writing long-form ads to amuse and intrigue my potential customers. I find myself doing this any time I sell something and it's gotten to the point where friends are asking me to write their ads. Too bad there is no money in writing ads. It's a lot of fun....)

Beautiful view in Steiner Ranch with The Keith Richards Deck… And a home attached. For lease (or sale).

When we bought this house, I walked straight through to the back deck and didn’t even notice the house, really; I walked straight through and stood there in the middle of a forest. Big oak trees, thick greenery, no houses, just our own personal jungle for all the back windows to enjoy.

Fortunately, the whole house was pretty awesome, too, so we bought it and lived there and loved it and raised our kids on what could very well be the best block in all of Steiner Ranch for kids. We bought the house because of two things. The lush greenbelt and the neighborhood and it’s all only gotten better over the years.

It’s the kind of neighborhood where there are always kids out on the street. Where neighbors put chairs out front by the sidewalk and talk at night. Where every 4th of July, there is a huge block party, often with bounce houses and a fire truck and everyone out in the street.

It’s the kind of neighborhood you read about but never get to live in. That’s Caney Creek. It’s a closed loop with one way in and one way out so no traffic just cruising through. It’s a great place for kids and pets and friendly people.

But back to that greenbelt.

When we bought the home, there was the typical ugly “privacy” fence. We tore it down. We’d much rather see the beautiful, big, living trees than a fence made of dead trees. Then we built the most monumental deck on the planet. A good friend was a meticulous builder so we built a deck that will be around long after Keith Richards inherits the planet. All of Steiner Ranch will be long gone but he’ll sit out on this deck playing guitar. It’s built of actual 2x4s and not thin decking materials. The 4x4 support beams are twice as abundant as what was normal. We even built it around the giant oak trees so the trees wrap around the deck and in turn, the trees shade the whole back of the house all year.

We call it The Keith Richards Deck.

That deck is kinda the center of the universe. When you go look at the house, you’ll agree. You’ll walk straight through the kitchen to the sliding glass door and out onto the deck and into your own Private Idaho.

We did put a fence back in—a little picket fence just enough to keep the dog from running off but not enough to interfere with your enjoyment of the arboreal canopy.

There are trails in the greenbelt. There is a deep creek back behind the house and our kids grew up taking the trails all the way to the pool. We even went on long walks with our cats to a secret swimming hole. The cats liked it and did it every time we hiked. And that secret swimming hole, has water most of the year. Pretty Huck Finn and nobody knows about it.

I suppose I should talk about the house.

It’s actually really nice. Around 2900 sq ft. HUUUGGGEEE living room in front. A central, open kitchen, back living room with windows overlooking the view and a great gas fireplace. There was originally a formal dining room off the kitchen but we walled it off and turned it into an office/guest room. It’s got a big window looking out to your forest.

Upstairs, a HUUUUGGGEEE master with big windows looking into the canopy of oaks. No need for curtains or blinds unless you hate dappled sunlight. There is nobody behind you but squirrels and birds. On one wall in the master is a double doorway to your own private bedroom/office/nursery. If you’ve got a baby, it’s a perfect nursery. Or you can load it up with your Peloton or an office or art studio. Whatever you do, there is a big picture window with a big tree giving you greenery and shade.

Across the hall are two more bedrooms with tall ceilings and big windows and lots of light.

At the end of the hall is the Jungle Bathroom. Typical bathroom with awesome vintage jungle wallpaper. I’d have to look at my watch to see if wallpaper is hip this week or not. But it’s delightful and you may love it or hate it but it’s easy to change. It’s a great house and yes, one can go bring in the hippest trends that will probably be unhip next month, but no matter how updated a house is, you can’t change the location. This is a monumental location… Location… Location.

The house is bright and comfortable and roomy and a very nice place to live when you’re not out on the deck having your morning coffee or calling friends or grilling or having happy hour or dinner. Really, no matter how nice and comfortable the house is, you’re going to be on the deck.

The Keith Richards Deck.

So The Keith Richards Deck (and attached home) will be available for lease in June. If you’re looking to buy, we’re open to ideas. Make us an offer we can’t refuse, and please, nothing equestrian.

Either way, we’ll throw in a vintage Rolling Stones record (as in real vinyl) so you can pay homage to the guy who will eventually play guitar on your deck when The End Times come.

But for now, you can step out into your private paradise and have your coffee and listen to the birds and wonder why it took so long to get here.
