Why air quality matters and how Bodhi can help

It’s a worldwide issue. Recent surveys and reports show how much workers returning after the pandemic are concerned about the quality of the air they will breathe.

And no wonder. In March, the US Environmental Protection Agency issued a series of guidelines to mitigate the risk of indoor aerosol transmission, the primary driver of COVID infections.

Among the EPA’s programs is the  Clean Air in Buildings Challenge, which asks building owners to increase ventilation and the quality of air filters, consider ultraviolet germicidal irradiation,  and to install portable air purifiers where good ventilation is difficult to achieve. 

Putting COVID aside, there’s strong evidence that air quality affects the transmission of colds, flu and other respiratory illnesses. A classic Harvard University study measured the air quality in 115 different independently ventilated work areas used by 3,720 hourly employees of one large company, and compared it to the sick leave they took. Those working in areas with the lowest quality air took 54% more sick time, on average, at an additional annual cost of $480 per employee!
