Why Raising Mental Health Awareness is Not Enough for Long-lasting Change to Happen.
Hi everyone, and welcome to this second article of 2023.
Let me ask you a question:
Are you tired of hearing about mental health awareness and wanting to go beyond it?
Then I trust my article Why Raising Mental Health Awareness is Not Enough for Long-lasting Change to Happen will be helpful to you.
We live in a world where we are bombarded by information, data, and statistics daily. It's easy to become overwhelmed by it, but this doesn't have to be the case. Reflecting on what's important and how you can use that information to develop your strategy for better mental and emotional well-being, success, and change can help you get ahead of everyone else.
What inspired me to write this article is what I've learned from Tony J. Selimi regarding why raising awareness of mental health within a business setting or any other setting is insufficient. And why it's crucial to take action and work with expert coaches like Tony, who can assist in going beyond this approach as you look to turn your business's mental health costs into mental health gains.
I speak daily to colleagues and people from all walks of life who work for companies that have implemented online courses to help with mental health awareness. The truth is, many of them share that they don't use them, and secondly, it is a one-way approach. For actual change to happen requires someone to have the skills to listen to you and ask powerful questions that determine what is going on in your mind, especially your subconscious mind.
So, if you’re a CEO, Business, or Mental Health Leader who's followed is following or is looking to go with the raising awareness approach to support employees' mental health, well, you may want to start reading The Unfakeable Code and A Path to Excellence. Please sit back and soak in all of the life-changing content Tony shares in both books, as it’s guaranteed to deliver enormous value to you as well as save you much time, money and effort in both the short and long term.
Through the awareness approach, you will learn significant insights into why you may not be achieving the results you thought you would have. And why a wiser choice for you and your business has to go far beyond what many see as a limiting approach. Combining coaching, e-courses, speaking, and training your employees can create remarkable turnarounds and achievements in all your employees. For the last seven years, I've invested time, energy, and money to be coached by Tony to make the seemingly impossible results happen.
It is what all my managers, leaders, and CEOs have seen in me since I began my investment to work with Tony J. Selimi, a human behaviour expert who specialises in helping others to break free from the self-limiting beliefs that hold them back from achieving personal excellence, in all areas of life.
As a CEO, Business Leader, you know it’s wise to carry out due diligence before creating any plan or a growth strategy that includes a sound mental health strategy. It makes for sound business acumen, and by doing so, you'll also gain invaluable insights into where your strategies are leading you, which can be both good and not-so-good.
And by demonstrating such an approach, others, such as your staff and stakeholders, will indeed view you as someone proactive, rational, and sensible by doing so, something I’m sure you’ll like for others to see in you.
So, let’s take today as an example; your company is looking to embark on the challenge of supporting employees' mental health and well-being more effectively and efficiently. So before starting, it's wise, as I've learned through being mentored by the World's Leading Business Coach, Tony J. Selimi, to look at a few aspects of your why and why to even go ahead with this.
Here are a few below of, in reality, what are thousands upon thousands of reasons for commencing with a mental health strategy.
Company Why’s:
· The company wants to turn their rising mental health costs affecting profits into gains.
· The company wants to see increases in overall organisational productivity and performance.
· The company wants to be seen in actuality as one that is genuinely progressive and caring.
· The company wants to attract the talent they want and retain that which they have.
· The company wants to be seen as the go-to #1 company in the world to work for when it comes to supporting employees' mental health.
Employees Why’s:
· Your employees are seeking more support for their mental health now than ever, which will only increase over time.
· Employees want to see the company’s mental health strategies being created in real-time actuality, not just virtually, as this further reduces the stigma for them when discussing mental health.
· Employees want their employers to care about their health and welfare, not just treat them as numbers.
· Employees want to work with coaches who are not full-time employees of the company they are working for, as it gives them peace of mind, safety, and security within their job should they disclose a mental health issue or illness.
· Employees now, in 2023, expect and want genuine mental health support from their employers because, in truth, many leave companies now when not enough of this support materialises, or what does emerge is seen to be an exercise to tick boxes.

Now that you have a few of your why's, next it would be prudent to do your research, and believe it or not, you're actually in quite a good place to start because following the Covid pandemic of 2020, you’ll be able to examine, the strategies other companies adopted during that time, and all available data since these strategies where adopted, such as costs, staff retention and employee engagement rates/ levels etc.
And BOOM, a few clicks on the internet later and you’ve found swathes of this information, and most likely one of the most notable that arose during your search was the importance companies globally have placed on raising mental health awareness or engaging with outside entities and for them to raise this awareness for them within their companies.
Great, you say to yourself, as this reaffirms your chain of thought, but WHOOAA wait a minute, another idea has just entered your mind, as you also remember during your search that you read that mental health business costs have soared exponentially in recent years, especially post-pandemic.

This got you thinking deeper and raised a few Red Flags; at the very least, it should have.
So now, as that CEO, or someone appointed to lead mental health within your company, you might be finding yourself in a quandary and even in a state of perplexion because, going by your internet search, you've grown your awareness to a new level. Where you realise that everything you’ve looked at when it comes to raising mental health awareness, which you thought would be the correct approach, in actuality appears not to be quite so, as the costs etc., associated with mental health are still spiralling uncontrollably, and are only predicted to do so in the years to come, as all available data shows.
As that conscientious leader, though, as you make your way home that evening, you start asking yourself, with all that companies have done during the pandemic and post-pandemic, how is this so?
Next day, you decide to delve deeper into these costs as you know it's essential to go beyond raising mental health awareness as your primary means of supporting your employees and the success of your business's present and future.
According to the Deloitte Report released in April of 2022, that you came across Mental Health costs have increased, up to £56bn in 2020-21 compared to £45bn in 2019, now looking at this objectively, as you know, it's wise to do, this rise would perhaps be expected considering the pandemic times of 2020, 2021. But on the other hand, these times also saw a surge in companies promoting mental health awareness, which adds to your perplexion.
Leading you to question, as you ponder what’s good for your health and that of your company, has to promote mental health awareness abated in any way the costs associated with mental health, and is it likely to do so?
Now as you consider the answer, you also recall that at any time, both you and your employees are subject to both external and internal influences and circumstances beyond both your and their control knowing these will impact their mental health, which now leaves you asking yourself how practical is awareness, in helping them with these unforeseen circumstantial changes?
COVID-19 and the current Cost of Living Crisis are just two recent examples of how the promotion of awareness is nowhere near enough to help when such unforeseen circumstances happen.
As part of your answer, you conclude that it would be truly wise and beneficial to research this field more comprehensively, as it'll allow you to grasp more fully what you’re honestly dealing with instead of initially focusing attention and importance on raising awareness, as practically all companies globally before you have done so.
As someone who's an active mental health ambassador, loves giving back, has an active interest in improving mental health for all at all the companies I've worked, and who's spent years writing articles and doing the research, all currently available research would suggest raising awareness will never be enough, and that more must be done.
For twenty years, I was made aware of what OCD does to me, but only after I took action and started to work with Tony that my OCD started to improve, and my life changed.
And if you think about it, we are asking more people to come forward and speak about mental health globally. Globally mental health illnesses are on the rise exponentially whilst simultaneously, the help out there already can't cope and is overburdened. Waiting times in the UK alone for some NHS Mental Health Services are at two years plus for some people, and this will only worsen, despite what the government may put out there.
So if more than the current systems and methods that companies use are needed now, do you think they will be enough in the future? Even a year from now, as demand grows, and where will this leave you as a company?
You also recall hearing many business leaders promote that, as an industry and society, we must become more aware as if this is an immediate solution.
When the truth is, as I've learned from Tony J. Selimi and his fantastic book A Path to Wisdom, awareness is only the first step, one can take twenty-four more steps to improve their mental and emotional state.
And suppose those saying these words were to expand on them, examine them in detail. What exactly do they mean, both for them and others? It will mean billions of things individual to billions of people. Some may find it encouraging; others disparaging, all in congruence with their experiences of mental health.
Yet if they or their teams were coached like me by a coach like Tony J. Selimi and were to research thoroughly, they'd indeed become more learned and educated and see this as an opportunity to grow their understanding and also see this isn't a new approach, as even before the pandemic in 2018, this was being highlighted in articles such as this one from The Guardian.
And as the article mentions, essentially, mental health awareness is fine, but action is what’s needed. Awareness is great for prompting those with issues to seek help, but effectively meaningless if there’s no help available.
If mental health awareness can be channelled into dealing with the issues around it, that would be great. But raising awareness is just the start of the process, not the end. There’s much work that needs doing here. And it's wise for us all to be aware of that.
But as I mentioned at the start of this article, this is a series and one where you can significantly look forward to reading workable solutions to your business's mental health pandemic, which, whether you like it or not, is here, and as all studies show is greatly disaffecting your business at all levels, most notably financially.
In the upcoming articles, it’ll be my pleasure to share with you my experience of what helped me to overcome and live life free of near to 40 perceived incurable mental health illnesses along the way, making me a highly productive, sought-after and high-performing, communicative employee, and how this came about. And although awareness played a part, what brought these changes to my life? Well, it was many aspects of investing and working with Tony J. Selimi, an expert in human behaviour, emotional intelligence, and maximising human potential. However, the one I'll concentrate on next is 'The Importance of Human Interaction, when healing oneself of all that pains them’.
Until next time, do take care.
PS: Before I go, if you’re a curious soul and would love to learn more about yourself, why not go back and reread the part of the article where it mentions your company and employees' why's? And apply how raising awareness within industries and society will help you achieve these. You may well be interested and enlightened by what you see with your mind and how priceless it is that which you discover, that you’re getting for free, but which took me years of financial investment with Tony J. Selimi to find.
