Why Are There So Many Unread Books on Your Shelf?

Take a moment to think about it.

It's easy to say that you don’t have the time, but that's not really the issue. The truth is, most of us can find 15 to 20 minutes a day for things that matter. The real challenge is that no one taught you how to approach reading nonfiction books as an adult.

As children, we were trained to read every word from left to right, absorbing each detail for fear of missing part of the story. That works for fiction, where the narrative builds with every word. However, for nonfiction books, reading every single word may not be the most effective strategy.

Educator Russell Stauffer discovered that, on the average page of a nonfiction book, only 4 to 11 percent of the text is truly meaningful. That boils down to about one sentence per page. In other words, only a small fraction of the information you’re reading is crucial for your understanding.

This is where the 80/20 Rule comes into play. You can read just 20 percent of a nonfiction book and still grasp 80 percent of its content. But the key question is: which 20 percent should you read?

Now, look at your bookshelf full of unread books. Some of them may no longer be relevant to your current needs. However, many still hold valuable information that could help you in your career or business. By not accessing that knowledge, you could be missing out on important insights that might push you forward.

The solution lies in learning to read strategically. Instead of reading every word, focus on reading with a purpose. Identify what’s essential for you and dive into those sections.

So, how do you start reading more strategically?

So relatable Avil Beckford! Those unread books seem to multiply, but I love the idea of shifting our reading approach instead of stressing about time.
