to work well with subcontractors, you need…

To keep growing, you need more support.

But before you can work effectively with subcontractors, you need to change your mind.

I’ll tell a quick story about a subcontractor who let me down, and then I'll share five beliefs that can result from experiences like that.

The beliefs get in the way of your growth.

How do savvy freelancers signal their value?

They create juicy offers.

Chances are, you’re already creating significant value for your clients, but that may be hard for them to see, especially for new clients who will make unfair comparisons between you and someone with half your talent, a tenth of your expertise, and a hundredth of your wit and good taste.

Juicy offers make a dramatic and exciting impact on your earning because strategic changes to your packaging communicate higher value to the client.

That was the case for my coaching clients and for me. Now, it’s your turn.

About Austin L. Church

Hi, I'm Austin L. Church, a writer, marketing consultant, and business coach.

I started freelancing in 2009 after finishing my M.A. in Literature and getting laid off from a marketing agency. Freelancing led to a portfolio of mobile apps, tech startup, children's book, branding studio, and consulting practice.

Over the last 15 years, I've made north of $1.8 million as a creative entrepreneur, and looking back, I see so many missed opportunities.

That's why I'm so passionate about stacking up specific advantages and teaching freelancers, consultants, and creators how to do the same.

I want more of us to find our income-lifestyle sweet spot.

Austin, oh man, I feel this so hard! The freelancer rollercoaster is wild, but you’re absolutely right, one bad experience shouldn’t cloud the whole journey. It’s all about dialing in that balance between scaling and keeping quality tight. When you nail it, the payoff is badass. Love how you framed this!

I've had this happen and it's always disappointing. Having SOPs in place that include a task for the contractor or freelancer to review the brief the day it's assigned and let you know of any questions then can help avoid this.

I've hired a lot of sub-contractors and found the ones that were open and honest kept winning work with me. Deadlines get missed-if I'm prepared for it and prepared the client it's rarely an issue.

Thanks for the insights when it comes to hiring 'subs', Austin! 👏 In teaching them to do it the 'right way'... you'll also be (finally) getting YOUR 'systems' written down! Realizing there IS a "method to your madness"! 😉
