Are you a Go-Getter or a Go-Giver?
If you’re a regular reader of these newsletters, you know I’m passionate about my sleep – but this week I haven’t gotten much of it!
All for great reason though, I’ve been all over this week (literally) with client sessions in Palmerston North & Whangarei.
For my clients in Whangarei, our usual boardroom wasn’t available, so we had to get creative.
Instead of a typical corporate venue, we rented an Airbnb that sleeps 9 people & held our session around the dining room table. Sadly whilst it may sleep 9 people they clearly don’t all eat together unless they are midgets as the dining table wasn’t that big. Needless to say, it was ‘cosy’.
However, the informal setting really brought out the tough conversations & helped the team be comfortable with being uncomfortable. It was such a productive session & the team found the session incredibly valuable 💖
I missed quality sleep for the last 4 days because of early morning drives / flights & foreign beds BUT it’s all worth it when I see my clients IDSing & resolving the most important issues for good, and leaving the session with laser-sharp focus & enthusiasm for the next quarter!
And the plus side to travel is that I got to listen to not 1 but 2 audiobooks on the drive to and back from Whangarei. You can find out more about these in my find of the week!
Thinking about the weekend ahead - happy Matariki! Hope you get some quality time with your loved ones, get some time to reflect on the past year, get excited about the New Year & have even more time to celebrate the present 😁
Here’s this week’s business tip, life hack & find of the week… And don’t forget the inspirational quote, which you can download as a wallpaper or lock screen for your phone.
As always, if you find great things that you’d like to share then feel free to email me for inclusion in one of my weekly newsletters.
BETTER BUSINESS: Picking the right apple
Sara Stern is a Certified EOS Implementer who specialises in family business. She is one of my US colleagues / friends & I love the stuff that she puts out to help family businesses. One thing she has noticed time & time again is that family businesses spend huge amounts of time & resources to write job descriptions.
I’m certain it’s not just family-owned businesses that have the same problem. As business owners, we know that it is absolutely essential to have the right people in the right seats.
One bad apple can rot your business like no other & if this is not addressed, the right people – the employees you adore, will be the ones to leave.
So I can understand why so much time, care & resources are poured into making these job descriptions perfect. And it gives us a golden opportunity to streamline & improve on this essential process.
How can we use EOS tools to make it less painful for everyone involved while also ensuring quality & accuracy?
Sara wrote this article about how she approaches it & provides the exact template she works off.
It makes the process of picking the right apple much smoother – possibly even generating some excitement for a new superstar in the team!
Read the article to get the full job description template:
She’s also been a guest on my podcast, Better Business, Better Life. Sara is on a quest to help owners get what they want from their family business & build lasting legacies.
Her episode is full of fantastic tips from her experience working with hundreds of family businesses. Watch it here.
BETTER LIFE: Win-win isn’t actually a win!
My trip to Whangarei was perfect to catch up on some reading – well, listening. I listened to the audiobook of The Go-Giver on the way up & The Go-Giver Marriage on the drive back down.
It’s been on my ‘to-read ‘list for a while after Vijay, a fellow EOS Implementer & good friend, mentioned the book in one of his LinkedIn posts.
You definitely need to read The Go-Giver first – it introduces the central concept that the rest of the series delves into. There’s also The Go-Giver Leader, The Go-Giver Influencer, Go-Givers Sell More & The Go-Giver Marriage.
The Go-Giver is a story about Joe, who is a real go-getter – but the harder he works, the further he seems to get from his goals.

He discovers the 5 laws of Stratospheric Success & the core idea is shifting the focus from getting to giving—putting others’ interests first and continually adding value to their lives. This is what ultimately leads to unexpected returns.
It’s like the EOS way of ‘Help First.’ To be clear though, both the EOS help first & the Go-Giver’s ‘give and you shall receive’ should not be actioned with the expectation of getting something back.
It’s truly about wanting to help & if you do end up getting something out of it, then that’s an added bonus - not a requirement.
Another key point I agreed with is that a win-win isn't actually a good outcome for either party. In order to achieve this ‘win-win’, you are both compromising in some way. The best outcome is helping each other to get exactly what they want, not forcing each other to settle for not-quite-right.
I loved both books & it’s a great reminder that in order to receive, you must be open to giving!

FIND OF THE WEEK: The one to rule them all
Do you have one simple, go-to place for people to find your content? I’m sure you have a website, but does it truly encapsulate all of your work, not just your business?
One of my favourite sessions at the quarterly Business Blueprint conference I attended was ‘Timely Tech.’ I’m a massive tech geek and love finding new & interesting tools to try out!
And while it is really fun to play around with, ultimately it’s always about finding better, smarter ways of working that improve client experience or saves valuable time.
The latest find is bio.link – it’s definitely not the only platform out there & I’ve used others before but I found this one easy to use.
It’s simple & fuss-free to set up with a whole bunch of free templates to choose from, which is fantastic for time-poor business owners like myself. The designs have been optimised for clicks & they pride themselves on lightning loading speed. It also has the analytics & visitor stats you need while maintaining the privacy of your visitors.
And you know how much I love a guarantee. Bio.link has one – it’s free forever!
If you don’t have something like this set up I highly recommend trying out Bio.link. It can be for your personal brand like your guest features, blog articles & other content you’ve produced as well as your business services or products.
It’s so handy having my newsletter, podcast, free ebook & resources, webinars and a way to contact me, all in the same place. My clients are all busy entrepreneurs so having one landing page that rapidly directs you to the right resource for you is essential!
It means on my LinkedIn profile I can have one website link that links to everything I do – same on my email signature.
