Are you living in the gap? Or the gain?...

Are you living in the gap? Or the gain?...

Hello team 😊

A concept I have learned about recently which has really helped me to improve my overall happiness and sense of fulfilment is “the gap and the gain”.

The basic premise is that we spend a lot of time thinking about the gap between where we are now and where we want to be.

This is called “gap thinking” and is where most of us tend to spend our reflection time.

The problem with this is that it can and will get us down if we only focus on this.

Then this leads to negative thinking, self-doubt, less energy, less quality sleep etc.

In contrast to this is “gain thinking” which is where we measure backwards to see just how far we have come in the last week, month, quarter, year, 5 years etc.

This takes a big shift in thinking for most people, especially high achievers who are so very goal and gap focussed!

There are so many benefits to “gain thinking”!

It keeps you positive, motivated, inspired, energized etc! And when your mindset is like this (in the positive zone) you sleep better, you are more productive, you are better company, a better team mate, parent, spouse etc!

Its not that it distracts you from your ultimate goals and vision but you can actually use it as a lever to accelerate your journey.

Nor am I suggesting that you should give up on your goals or water them down. No way. But this shift in thinking will help you to stay a lot more positive and motivated on your life journey.

So now you must take deliberate action to shift your mind from “the gap” to “the gain”!

A useful acronym to remember is this: AMB! Always measure backwards!

The goal from now on is to focus your reflection on the gain and your energy on the gap!

I am sharing an idea below that is working really well for me.

Now take action: Write down at least 3 big wins/gains for the last week, then do the same for the last month, then year then 5 years then 10 years.

This is a very useful list to keep in the front or back of your diary (or better still your PBA High Performance Planner available at www.premierbusinessacademy.co.nz) for those times when you slip into “gap thinking”. Simply review your list and take a minute to add some more recent wins to it. I recommend that you keep it as a “live list” so that it keeps growing over time.

Remember knowledge without action is worthless! So take positive action now!

Cheers to your ongoing growth and success! :)
