If you think it's about more CV's, you've missed the point

Time and again, I see businesses spend a fortune on recruitment agencies only to be handed a stack of CVs and left with the hard work of sorting through them. It’s frustrating to see companies pay high prices for a service that should make their lives easier—but often just adds to the workload. If you’re going to invest in an agency, it’s vital to get your money’s worth. After all, you’re not paying for a flood of CVs; you’re paying for quality candidates and for this part of the recruitment process to be pain free.

When engaging with an agency, you should be able to rely on them to handle the legwork and deliver a handful of top-notch candidates, not an inbox full of maybes. Here are three ways to ensure you’re getting true value for your investment:

⌛️1. Set Clear Expectations from the Start

Make it clear that you’re not looking for volume—you want quality. Outline your goals, the kind of candidates you’re after, and the level of pre-screening you expect the agency to handle. The right agency will listen, ask insightful questions, and align with your vision. Don’t be afraid to discuss your ideal candidate’s qualities, behaviours, and the impact you expect them to have. Agencies worth their salt will tailor their approach to meet these specific needs, not just hand you a stack of CV’s or profiles to sort through.

💻2. Demand Transparency in Their Process

A true partner agency will operate with full transparency, allowing you to log into a shared system where you can track progress in real-time. You should be able to see where each candidate stands in the pipeline, how many have been reviewed, and how many CV’s they’ve sifted through, candidates they’ve spoken with, to find those diamonds in the rough. Ask about their sourcing methods, assessment criteria, and how they ensure each candidate aligns with your business needs. This level of openness keeps you in the loop without the headache, ensuring you’re not just left in the dark waiting for results. The right agency isn’t just filling seats; they’re an active partner invested in finding you the A-Team Players.

📝3. Insist on a Small, Curated Shortlist

A pile of CVs is not a solution—it’s just more work for you. Set the expectation that you only want to see a few, carefully selected candidates who meet your criteria. With transparent access to their process, you can appreciate the effort it takes to get to that refined list. A quality agency will provide a curated shortlist of pre-screened individuals, ensuring each one is worth your time. This approach is ultimately a time-saver for you, allowing you to focus on choosing the best person rather than sifting through dozens of non-starters.

Remember, if you’re going to pay for recruitment services, make sure you’re getting real value. You’re investing in expertise, insight, and quality candidates—not a bulk order of CVs. A good agency should act as a true partner, helping you bring in the best people without leaving you to do all the heavy lifting yourself. By setting expectations, demanding transparency, and holding them to a high standard of quality, you’ll find a partner that delivers real results—one great hire at a time.

Absolutely! There’s nothing worse than paying for an agency and ending up with a pile of CVs to sort yourself. It’s all about finding candidates who actually get what the role is about. I'm curious, what’s one key question you’d suggest asking an agency to make sure they are truly focused on quality?

I’m buried under an avalanche of cvs just by posting on LinkedIn - much rather have a few qualified applicants
