Will Your Presentation Pass 'The Berean Test?'

Will your quotations and anecdotes pass 'The Berean Test'?

Let me explain, adding that this is NOT an attempt to proselytize.

In Acts Chapter 17 in the Christian Bible, Saint Paul preaches in Thessalonica. Many reject his message, a riot ensues, and he has to hide out. His hosts are arrested, have to be bailed out, and they sneak Paul off to Berea under cover of night. High drama!

Paul preaches to the Bereans, who had 'more noble character' than the Thessalonians. EVERY DAY they examined their Scriptures and VERIFIED that Paul spoke truth.

The Bereans listened, VERIFIED, then accepted his message.

If you're like me, you will likely accept a presenter’s words at face value.

Similarly, audiences will accept OURS.

But will our stories, stats, quotes and anecdotes pass 'The Berean Test'?

That hit me when I learned that I had been inadvertently mis-attributing a quotation.

'LIFE IS WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU WHILE YOU'RE BUSY MAKING OTHER PLANS' is widely attributed to The Beatles’ John Lennon, who stated it in the song 'BEAUTIFUL BOY (DARLING BOY)'. Check it out online if you wish.

I can't recall why, but I decided to verify the source and learned that in the January 1957 issue of Readers Digest, author Allen Saunders wrote: 'Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans.' WOW! I had failed 'The Berean Test!'

This is a minor example, but the principle remains. One seemingly insignificant error can damage one's reputation and call one's integrity into question.

Let’s apply 'The Berean Test' as a consumer. 'Fake news', conspiracy theories, dubious remedies, doctored videos etc. abound. FACT-CHECK!

More importantly, let’s apply 'The Berean Test' as providers. Avoid statements like:

"One study said something like..."

"Don't quote me on this, but I think it was (INSERT NAME) or somebody who said (QUOTE)" I’ve heard both before.

That screams “lack of preparation or research.”

Let's not give anyone reasons to question our work ethic, or our integrity.

Let's all pass 'The Berean Test!'

This is a great post, Mark! As a former professor I spent a lot of time encouraging students to check (and double and triple check) their sources! Still today, as a speaker and coach I do the same to cite the sources I use in coaching materials or quotes I share. Those quotes can be tricky…something valuable is often repeated by many!

Mark: I agree! A good speaker should strive to have their quotations and anecdotes pass 'The Berean Test' when presenting a message. By doing so, they demonstrate a commitment to intellectual honesty and credibility. Ensuring the accuracy, authenticity, and proper sourcing of information helps build trust with the audience and enhances the overall impact of the message being delivered. It's a responsible and effective approach that fosters a climate of critical thinking and informed spoken communication.

Thanks Mark! Sighting sources during a speech is a necessary drudgery. It takes away time from all of our other amazing insights! But this "Berean Test" is important, especially if using AI when writing your speech.

Fact-check indeed! Quotes are so easy to use without understanding the source. I've certainly made this mistake before. Now, I verify who said it AND read up on who said it if I'm not sure who they are.
