I recently participated in the West Africa Energy Cooperation Summit (#WAECS24) in Lomé, hosted by EnergyNet Ltd., where I joined the panel titled "Energy Storage: Opportunities, Market Dynamics, Financing, and Regulation".
Moderated by Odumosu Stephany from Sun King, I was privileged to share insights alongside:
▪️Abdel Gafar Akondo, Project Manager, Ministry of Mines & Energy Resources, Togolese Republic
▪️Andrea Bertello, Director of Country Engagements & Partnerships, RELP
▪️David McGill, Director, Energy, Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC)
▪️Yao AZOUMAH, CEO & Founder, KYA-Energy GROUP
▪️ Frédéric Verdol, Program Leader, Infrastructure, The World Bank Group
We explored the financing dynamics, opportunities, challenges, and diverse uses of energy storage, including its potential to facilitate the uptake of renewable energy in the West African sub region. A key focus of my submission was the need for African policymakers to set specific policy targets for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to complement the growing renewable energy targets set by governments. I also emphasized the importance of adopting innovative policy instruments to accelerate investments and unlock the full potential of BESS in achieving energy access, climate, and sustainability goals across both the region and the continent as a whole.
