Meet Lexi! 👋 She’s an upReach Summer Intern in DESNZ and she’s currently studying Aerospace Engineering at the University of Sheffield. This Black History Month (BHM) Rhiana Dennis-Small, a DESNZ economist, talks about the importance of BHM and what the Civil Service Race Forum (CSRF) means to her.    “Black History Month (BHM) is important to me as it is a time where members of the black community finally have a safe space to openly discuss our challenges and celebrate our successes more widely. It is also a time where we can look back and celebrate those in history who paved the way for future generations, but unfortunately did not get the recognition that they deserved.”    “The Civil Service Race Forum (CSRF) is important to me personally as I was able to meet those who helped and invested in me. The members I met and the mentors I had, all made me feel heard and seen. A rewarding summer at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero! Over the past 12 weeks, I had the incredible opportunity to intern with the GGR (Greenhouse Gas Removal) policy and deployment team through the Change100 summer internship programme . My work focused on shaping future international GGR policy, exploring strategies to align global net zero targets with innovative carbon removal technologies. This experience has been both insightful and challenging, giving me hands-on exposure to the intricacies of environmental policy, the evolving landscape of energy security, and the critical role GGR plays in tackling the climate crisis. Throughout the internship, I developed key skills, including policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative problem-solving. I also gained a deeper understanding of the technical and regulatory challenges involved in deploying large-scale GGR solutions. These experiences have sharpened my ability to navigate complex policy environments—skills that will undoubtedly prove invaluable as I complete my degree and look ahead to post-university life! I must give a huge thanks to Emma Campbell and Zoë Walker who's guidance and mentorship were invaluable throughout my time in DESNZ. I was supported and encouraged to take initiative and explore wider areas of interest which greatly enhanced my experience and growth over the 12 weeks. This internship has reinforced my passion for creating a sustainable future and has equipped me with the knowledge and tools to make a meaningful impact post-graduation. The opportunity to gain professional experience was invaluable and built upon my academic knowledge in a real life setting. It also reaffirmed my commitment to a more sustainable future and tackling climate change.
