ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar joined African aviation Ministers and other senior leaders in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, last week to mark 25 years of aviation liberalization in Africa and to chart a course for the continent's aviation future. Read more ⬇️

ICAO has marked a significant milestone in Somalia following the successful testing of new Air Traffic Management (ATM) and communication systems in Mogadishu. The Final Site Acceptance Test (FSAT), conducted from 17-22 November 2024, validated the successful implementation of modern air navigation systems at both the Mogadishu Area Control Centre and Airport Tower. Working in close coordination with the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA), our capacity building teams completed comprehensive testing of the new infrastructure. The formal FSAT certification on 21 November completed the successful delivery of this critical phase in ICAO's ongoing support to strengthen Somalia's air navigation capabilities. This implementation advances ICAO's strategic objectives for the Africa-Indian Ocean region, particularly in: ✈️ Enhancing aviation safety standards ✈️ Improving air navigation efficiency ✈️ Building sustainable local capacity While the core systems are now in place, ICAO will continue supporting Somalia through targeted follow-up activities to ensure optimal system performance and capability development. ICAO remains steadfast in its commitment to providing comprehensive implementation support in this Region, through its ICAO Eastern and Southern African Regional Office and globally, ensuring aviation safety, security, and sustainability for a connected world.

The ICAO Eastern and Southern African Regional Office is delivering ICAO Security Culture Workshop and AVSEC Certification Systems Workshop for South Sudan to 24 Aviation industry personnel, to support the efforts of the State, towards enhancement of its Aviation Security Oversight System. The workshops started on Monday 2nd December and will end on 13th December 2024. The opening ceremony was presided over by Major General (Rtd) Kur Kuol Ajieu, General Manager of the Juba International Airport, on behalf of the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Captain John Subek David Dada.#icao #aviationsecurity #AfricanAviation #SouthSudan #ASEC

During the Extraordinary Session of the ICAO Council in Chicago on 5 December, the Council adopted a resolution acknowledging ICAO's contributions since its founding in December 1944, and outlining a vision for a safe, sustainable, and accessible aviation sector for all. The session took place in the same room of the Chicago Hilton (formerly Stevens Hotel) where the diplomatic conference was held 80 years ago. This historic resolution also celebrates the contributions of civil aviation to international cooperation, peace, and economic development. It urges Member States to continue promoting innovation, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability, including achieving #NetZero carbon emissions by 2050. This year we return to the place where it all began 80 years ago in Chicago, Illinois. It was in Chicago that the Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known as the Chicago Convention, was signed in 1944, marking the beginning of a new chapter in international aviation history. As part of the ongoing #ICAO80 celebrations, the ICAO Eastern and Southern African Regional Office, led by Regional Director Lucy Wanjiku Mbugua, recently organized a run in Karura Forest, Nairobi, Kenya. The event attracted nearly 800 participants, bringing together members of the local United Nations community, the aviation industry, and beyond. Participants took part in various categories, including a 3km walk, a 15km run, and a 21km run. Congratulations to all the participants for their incredible efforts and sportsmanship!

Today, KAA participated in the #ICAO80 fun run at Karura Forest, Nairobi, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The event was organized by the ICAO Eastern and Southern African Regional Office and brought together key stakeholders from the United Nations, the Kenyan aviation industry, and representatives from the Ministry of Transport. With over 150 KAA staff participating, we ran together to honor a legacy of safety, innovation, and unity in the skies. Here's to many more years of progress in global aviation!
