Ecotoxicology and Risk Assessment at NIVA are experts on the fate and effects of chemicals on the aquatic environment.

About us

Ecotoxicology and Risk Assessment at NIVA covers all aspects of environmental hazards and risk assessments of chemicals. We are continuously developing new and improving existing test methods, to better assess the effects of chemical substances in both the freshwater and marine environments. Our experts assess risk by comparing the harmful effects of chemical on aquatic organisms. We have expertise in bioaccumulation, biodegradation and ecotoxicity tests. This enables us to develop and carry out complex ecotoxicity tests tailored to our customers' needs. Our studies range from small-scale systems with algae and invertebrates to large-scale fish studies in marine flow through systems. In addition, we have access to one of the largest collections of algae species in Europe through NIVA's algae culture collection. We use methods such as NIVA's Computational Toxicology Program (NCTP), Bayesian network modelling, fate assessments, biological effect assessments and biological monitoring. The section uses in silico techniques and performs both in vitro and in vivo assays.

Yesterday our colleagues Samantha Eslava Martins and Emelie Forsman presented their work at the Veg og vannforurensing Nordisk samarbeid. They held an exciting talk about the effects of particles from road tunnel construction on the Atlantic salmon. This work is a collaboration between the section for Ecotoxicology and Risk Assessment and the section for Urban environments and Infrastructure at The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), and the Norwegian Public Road Administration.

Pleased to present the #RiskAOP project and our quantitative AOP (qAOP) work in the #NAM session at #SETACTianjin today. A lot of inspiring talks from other speakers in the session covering a wide range of approaches that can support next generation risk assessment (#NGRA) of chemicals. Met several old friends and made a lot of new connections to the Asia-Pacific (eco)toxicology community. Also got the chance to visit Tianjin, a beautiful city with a lot of histories, and one of the top universities in China - Nankai University. 🌊 Project Update: Tackling Marine Microplastic Pollution with MicroLEACH 🌍 We’re excited to share progress on the MicroLEACH project, a crucial initiative aimed at understanding the long-term impact of microplastics and their chemical additives on marine ecosystems. The increasing use of plastics by consumers and industries has led to a surge in plastic waste in our oceans, posing a severe threat to marine life. But it’s not just the plastic itself that’s concerning—chemical additives used in plastic production also introduce additional hazards. Our research focuses on the effects of microplastics and their associated chemical additives on key marine species in the Norwegian environment, including algae, copepods, mussels, worms, and fish. By mimicking real-world scenarios with present and future concentrations of microplastics, we aim to uncover how these particles and their additives accumulate in organisms and transfer along the marine food chain. Identifying the most vulnerable species will help us protect both ecosystem balance and economic value. The insights gained from MicroLEACH will contribute to the development of regulatory guidelines at the national and international levels to mitigate these threats. This project is led by the The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) in collaboration with esteemed partners: SINTEF (Norway), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) (Netherlands), University of Plymouth (UK), and The University of Queensland (Australia). Stay tuned as we continue to advance our understanding of this critical issue and work towards safeguarding our marine environments for future generations. #MarineScience #Microplastics #EnvironmentalResearch #Sustainability #OceanHealth #NIVA #MicroLEACH

🌿 Spotlight on Dr. Merete Grung: A Leader in Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology 🌍 We’re proud to recognize Dr. Merete Grung, an esteemed organic chemist and certified toxicologist, whose career spans decades of impactful research and scientific leadership. Dr. Grung earned her PhD in Chemistry from the Norwegian Institute of Technology in 1993 and became a certified toxicologist in 2011 (European Registered Toxicologist). From 2014 to 2021, she also served as Professor II in Toxicology at the Department of Biosciences at the University of Oslo. Since joining The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) in 2001, she has been at the forefront of research on environmental contaminants in aquatic environments and ecotoxicological risk assessment. She is involved in many monitoring projects concerning contamintants on commission from Norwegian Environmental Agency; coastal monitoring, Urban Fjord, Reference rivers and lake monitoring. Her work also includes collaborative projects with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, where she investigated the effects of road-derived contaminants and their potential bioaccumulation in organisms. She has also led significant studies on PFAS concentrations in water sources across Norway for Norsk Vann, revealing that while most sources had very low levels, higher concentrations were found near known PFAS sources. Another key area of her research is the impact of pharmaceuticals on the environment. In fact, Dr. Grung published Norway’s first risk assessment of pharmaceuticals in 2008. More recently, she has collaborated with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and other NIVA colleagues to estimate environmental concentrations of pharmaceuticals used in Norway. Additionally, her work with Ahus Hospital and the NRVA treatment plant involves closely monitoring pharmaceutical concentrations as they move from hospital environments, through treatment processes, and into the natural environment, assessing the associated risks. Dr. Grung’s contributions extend to projects that apply critical regulatory frameworks, including the Water Framework Directive, the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, the Drinking Water Directive, and REACH. Her dedication and expertise continue to make a profound impact on environmental science and public health. #EnvironmentalScience #Toxicology #PFAS #Pharmaceuticals #WaterQuality #Ecotoxicology #NIVA

🚨 ANTIVENOM Project: Safeguarding Marine Environments from Aquaculture Chemicals 🚨 As the ANTIVENOM project (https://lnkd.in/dY8dnVGz) comes to a close this year, we’re excited to highlight the important work being done in this project. The ANTIVENOM project is dedicated to exploring the environmental impact of chemical use in aquaculture, with a particular focus on whether the combined effects of multiple chemicals and organic matter present greater risks than previously understood. By developing new hazard assessment strategies and improving environmental risk assessments for veterinary medicines and antifoulants, ANTIVENOM has paved the way for more sustainable aquaculture practices. Our findings will help shape new sediment toxicity tests and influence policy changes to better protect northern European marine waters. With the involvement of industry experts and government stakeholders, the project has ensured a balance between scientific innovation, sustainability, and regulatory needs. Akvaplan-niva, Åkerblå AS, Wageningen University & Research, Deltares, and The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) are key members of the project's consortium. Stay tuned for the final outcomes and recommendations as we wrap up this important work! 🌊🐟 #Aquaculture #EnvironmentalImpact #Sustainability #ANTIVENOM #RiskAssessment #MarineProtection #ChemicalSafety
