  • Let's work together for safer, inclusive societies!

Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of #ViolenceAgainstWomen and the start of #16Days of Activism against gender-based violence, we reflect on the reality faced by millions of women and girls worldwide. 💭 While men are more susceptible to being victims of violence outside of their houses, women are at a higher risk of being victims of violence in their homes and at the hands of a family member or intimate partner: 60 percent of intentional homicides of women and girls occur in their homes (via data from new UN Women & UNODC report on femicides in 2023). Beyond the immediate loss, violence against women leaves lasting scars on physical and mental health, disrupts families, and perpetuates cycles of abuse across generations. Addressing this crisis demands global action to dismantle patriarchal norms, empower women, and ensure that every home is a place of safety, not fear. 🏠 Interventions like the RESPECT women: Preventing Violence Against Women framework, South Africa 🇿🇦’s Microfinance for AIDS & Gender Equity (IMAGE) initiative, and Zambia 🇿🇲’s Violence and Alcohol Treatment Program (VATU) program have shown that interventions focused on psychosocial support, economic empowerment, and education can drastically reduce violence. 💪 Let’s UNiTE to end violence against women. • 🌍 On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, GENSAC reaffirms its commitment to ending gender-based gun violence. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the illicit trade in small arms, and addressing this crisis is essential to creating safer, more inclusive societies. As the #16Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence begins, we call on everyone to join us in raising awareness, educating communities, and devising actionable solutions to #EndGunViolence. At GENSAC, we champion gender-responsive small arms control policies and emphasize the need for increased participation of women in disarmament processes. Together, we can build a future free from violence. 💪 CC: Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies, NYU Center on International Cooperation (CIC), #Sdg16Gensac
