The Cellular Agriculture Market is Booming! Confidence in the cellular agriculture and cell-cultured meat industry is growing rapidly. In Europe alone, public and philanthropic funding for alternative protein research reached a record €290 million in 2023, up from just €63 million in 2020—and it’s expected to keep rising. 🚀 But challenges remain. One of the biggest hurdles is cost, with high expenses driven by the recombinant proteins and growth factors needed for production. Here’s how we’re making a difference: Our team has developed a modular protein expression system that produces growth factors at 10x lower cost than the market average. By reducing costs, we’re bringing cell-cultured meat closer to becoming an economical, as well as an ethical and sustainable, choice. 🔬 Want to know more about how growth factors impact lab-grown meat? Catalyst 2024 Wrap Up. It’s been a week since our community came together to champion the next generation of founders. Now that the buzz has settled, we’re excited to share some highlights and shoutouts. First up, a huge congratulations to our winners: Nutra Pectin! Ryan Bosch and the team, you absolutely smashed your pitch and inspired us all with your innovation. For those lucky enough to witness the reveal and the team celebration, it was pure joy and optimism in motion. The competition was fierce, with such impressive talent that our judges created an impromptu runner-up prize for the outstanding Meghan Oosthuizen from H2Nutrio, who is walking away with three months at the UVU Bio Labs and an opportunity for a scale-up project with the CSIR. In an amazing show of community spirit, one attendee stepped up to offer their services as an extra prize for our winners (Jacques Stemmet from Dommisse Attorneys Inc—you’re a legend!). Now, we could spend all day on thank-yous, but we’ll try keep it (somewhat) short. Massive thanks to our sponsors and judges: Santosh Ramchuran from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Sandra Clelland from Von Seidels, 💡Daniel S. from Stocks & Strauss, and Oliver Preisig from inqaba biotec —there was no competition without your contributions. To our partners at UVU Bio and the UVU Africa team—Dheepak Maharajh, Quentin Pavitt, Vedantha Singh, and Yandisa Mtsewu —you’re absolute champs and we can’t wait to see where this partnership takes us. And, of course, to our Final 7 - turning ideas into reality is no small feat. Thank you for sharing your passion and vision with us. We’re proud to have provided you with a platform and can’t wait to see what’s next for all of you. Immobazyme reposted this
We mentioned the trip to Washington a few times, but nothing can describe the feeling of pride having a South African start-up hold their own on the international stage. Immobazyme represented by Ethan Hunter did a fantastic job. While they might not have won, they certainly came back with many new friends and opportunities for expansion. Special thanks to Richard Bendis and the entire team at BioHealth Innovation, Inc., you were amazing in supporting Ethan in his pitch preparation and making him feel welcome. We cannot wait to continue this journey in 2025 with BioCentrifuge hosted by TASK. https://lnkd.in/ddt63GUy
