Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd once again leads, with multiple deviations totaling billions, including R2.1B for maintenance of Kusile’s Flue Gas Desulphurization Plant. Other notable deviations include: a) R3.6B by National Home Builders Registration Council NHBRC for Microsoft licenses. b) R1.4B by Universal Service and Access Agency for set-top boxes. c) R600M by Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd for emergency coal procurement. What’s concerning? Recurring reliance on sole suppliers and emergency justifications across years. For instance, Eskom’s deviation - (we promise we aren't picking on Eskom) - for technical support in 2023 mirrors its emergency coal procurement in 2022. Why does this matter? Such patterns reveal gaps in planning and systemic inefficiencies in supply chain management. While emergencies and sole-supplier scenarios are valid in some cases, they shouldn’t become standard practice.
