Woolly Apple Aphid (WAA) is a highly problematic apple pest. This organism can reproduce parthenogenetically (asexually), in other words, the female eggs self-fertilise and don’t need to be fertilised by a male. This means that one individual female can start a new colony. In addition, WAA have aerial and subterranean phases, with overlapping generations. Many farmers have listed WAA as a concern and with the phasing out of Imidacloprid (which is widely used as a winter soil application, and should only be applied to trees younger than 15 years old), many growers are concerned about how they are going to manage WAA. At realIPM we recommend an integrated pest management program that includes good monitoring, mulches and cover crops, as well as the use of biopesticides & beneficial insects. Meet Real CryptoFIX! Cryptolaemus montrouzieri are predatory ladybird beetles for the control of mealybugs and soft scale insects. Adult beetles and larvae feed on mealybug eggs and young stages. Large Real CryptoFIX larvae feed on adult mealybug and look similar to their prey and are easily confused! We set out to prove that integrated farming practices can yield improved export quality fruit. Using 5 measures of export quality we were able to show that integrated pest management principles produced significantly better export quality fruit than the farm standard approach. We incorporated both our biological products as well as our nutritional products into a successful programme. At realIPM we work with farmers to really optimise their soil on their farm, before we start talking about solutions. This is Charl in a Pecan nut orchard (near Douglas, FS) installing Wetting Front Detectors. He places them in sets, one shallow, one deep. The meter reacts when a wetting front, due to irrigation, moves past. The meter retains a drainage water sample, which is then tested for electrical conductivity and nitrogen. This information will help the farmer improve water and nutrient management. In this this particular orchard, realIPM will be documenting the effects of applying humates to the soil, thereby potentially enabling the farmer to use nitrogen fertilisers more effectively! With the majority of Citrus farmers exporting their harvest, there is increasing international pressure to meet international standards relating to fungicide and pesticide use.
