Armand Supra from Civil Engineering claimed the top spot with his innovative project on Recycled Waste Plastic Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (RWP-FRP) Reinforcement Bars. Henry van der Merwe from Chemical Engineering took the runner-up position with his research on Amphoteric Precipitation Membranes. Rail Safety Campaign wins Stellenbosch University Social Impact Award On Wednesday, 4 December 2024, the Rail Safety Education and Awareness Campaign for Primary School Learners was honoured with the prestigious Stellenbosch University Social Impact Team Award. The team was represented by Mr pieter conradie and Mr Olabanji Asekun, both research engineers for the Gibela Chair within the Faculty of Engineering. They received this recognition at a ceremony held at the Stellenbosch University Museum. "Working with my father as my supervisor has been a unique experience," says Danie Theron, who will graduate cum laude with an MEng in Civil Engineering from Stellenbosch University in December 2024. Danie’s research, which addresses critical gaps in South Africa’s coastal monitoring, has led to the creation of the country's first satellite-derived shoreline database, spanning nearly 40 years. 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 When Herman Kamper, a professor in the Department of and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University (SU), speaks about his research on speech processing, its interdisciplinary nature is immediately evident. The lens through which he regards his research is that of #machine #learning - a branch of artificial intelligence (#AI) that enables systems to extract patterns and dependencies from data without being explicitly instructed on how to do so. True to the nature of the machine learning field, Kamper’s research incorporates #cognitive, #engineering, and #computer #science and fosters international cooperation between universities, industry, and companies on topics as seemingly disparate as online gaming design and child language development.
