Stellenbosch University’s INNOVUS/LaunchLab recently collaborated with SU International to host the annual Consul Corps event in Stellenbosch. This year’s theme, ‘tech transfers,’ focused on showcasing companies in the portfolio and highlighting the work of LaunchLab and INNOVUS in supporting innovation and entrepreneurs. I just came back from an amazing, and very inspiring week visiting Stellenbosch University in South Africa, and Innovus and Launch Lab in particular. It was great to experience the fantastic work by Innovus Director Anita Nel and her team supporting innovation and commercialisation of the excellent research at the university. Thanks for hosting me and my colleagues ! I also experienced a new efficient method for developing intercultural skills that I want to share: The UNESCO Story Circles developed by Dr. Darla Deardorff. All students at SU will, from now on, experience story circles as a way forward towards an even better future built on respect and understanding of cultural differences. Intercultural skills are needed in the "Rainbow Nation", and certainly around the world. Now more than ever. So start practising. We are incredibly proud of our Stellenbosch University (SU) student-preneurs who participated in this year’s Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE)’s Intervarsity Competition, one of South Africa’s most prestigious university entrepreneurship contests. 🙌 The talented SU entrepreneurs, selected at the Western Cape Regional Finals, competed against top universities in South Africa such as the University of the Western Cape, University of Cape Town, and Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Here are the outstanding SU finalists: 🥇Robyn Truter, CEO and Founder of Report Buddy (Existing Business - Tech category) 🥇Alexandra Lutz, Founder and CEO of Milani Education (Existing Business - Social Impact category) 🥇Chiedza Vushe, Founder of FineApplePixels (Existing Business - General category) The three finalists attended the National Finals event in Johannesburg last week, supported by Nadine Price, Prof. Sibusiso Moyo, Sibusiso Lukhele and Brandon Paschal and although the SU finalists did not make it to the final selection, it was an invaluable experience. We were honoured to host this year’s Annual Cape Town Consular Corps Engagement, welcoming over 17 international delegates. In true SU LaunchLab style, we shared our story of innovation and commercialisation through the inspiring pitches from some of our spinout companies: CubeSpace ADCS, PhagoFlux Pty (Ltd), and GreenX Engineering. 🚀🦠🌱 In his speech, Prof. Stan du Plessis, Chief Operating Officer of Finance and Operations, highlighted how universities serve as cosmopolitan spaces, welcoming students, scholars, and ideas from around the globe. In saying that, he emphasised that an open and critical intellectual environment is vital for cultivating excellence in academia. "We are excited to demonstrate the evolution of the modern research university, one that aims to significantly increase our positive social impact." Prof. du Plessis also noted that while Stellenbosch may have been made for Pinotage🍷, Stellenbosch University, the local business sector, and local government have turned it into the country’s leading center for entrepreneurship - a place where all South Africans can realise their potential.
