  • Global Antibiotic R&D Partnership (GARDP) in CPT

Researchers and site teams in South Africa and India have gathered in Cape Town and New Delhi respectively, to discuss the initial results of GARDP’s observational study on the management of antibiotic-resistant infections in hospitals. Data was collected and analyzed from patients being treated for infections caused by carbapenem-resistant organisms across five hospitals in India and five hospitals in South Africa. We are very grateful to our excellent site teams in both countries. The information gleaned from the study could ultimately help to improve treatments for hospital-acquired infections, which are among the deadliest of antibiotic-resistant infections. Medical Doctor –MB, ChB (cum laude) Stellenbosch University - Fascinated by the physiology of the human body, pathophysiology, and how to help those in need by treating the pathology holistically

I was honoured to have been invited by the Stellenbosch University & Tygerberg hospital Internal Medicine department to join 20 brilliant young doctors, nominated by South African hospitals, at a "Get to know you dinner" titled "The Future of Internal Medicine". I was inspired by the impactful speeches from the Head of Tygerberg hospital Internal Medicine, Professor Vernon Louw, Pulmonologist Prof Brian Allwood, and Prof Razeen Davids and Prof Yazied Chothia from Nephrology. Dr. Neshaad Schrueder and Khayelitsha Hospital's Head of Internal Medicine, Dr. Trevor Mnugni closed off with a few words of wisdom for our roads ahead, before allowing us to share about ourselves and why we love what we do. The theme that resonated as a strong predictor for success in medicine was the ability to cultivate a curious mind – never stop asking, "Why?". Asking questions helps you to make sense of the beautifully complex human body. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them personally throughout the evening and I treasure the knowledge and advice that was shared with me. I am excited to learn and grow through my internship and community service years, and can't wait to see what challenges and opportunities lie ahead! #StellenboschUniversity #InternalMedicine #Physician #Neurology

  • Rassie Erasmus: A Masterclass in Transformational Leadership

Rassie Erasmus: A Masterclass in Transformational Leadership "We simply call it heart" https://lnkd.in/d7xFgmW8 Rassie Erasmus, South Africa's rugby coach, exemplifies transformational leadership in sports. His ability to unite diverse individuals under a common goal has been pivotal to the Springboks' success. Key aspects for me of Erasmus's leadership approach: Higher Purpose: Erasmus instills a sense of national pride, reminding players they represent more than themselves. Self-Belief: He empowers players to believe in their abilities, fostering a winning mindset. Teamwork: Erasmus emphasizes that collective effort trumps individual stardom. Inclusivity: He creates an environment where every team member feels valued and essential. Shared Vision: Erasmus aligns the team around clear, inspiring objectives. Playing to Strengths: Erasmus tailors strategies to leverage the team's unique capabilities, rather than conforming to conventional tactics. Erasmus's leadership philosophy proves that when individuals unite for a greater cause, extraordinary achievements become possible. His approach transcends rugby, offering valuable lessons for leaders in any field.

"Seeing the Flowers": A Reflection on Perspective Recently, I had the privilege of working with students and doctors in Upington, discussing ECGs, point-of-care ultrasound, and clinical cases. Their enthusiasm was infectious, but one moment stood out: As we walked between sessions, I remarked, "Wow, what beautiful flowers!" A student replied, "I don't see the flowers." This exchange struck me deeply. In our demanding field, it's easy to develop tunnel vision, focusing solely on tasks and challenges. But "seeing the flowers" is about more than just noticing plants: It's about finding moments of joy in our daily work. Recognizing growth and resilience in our patients and ourselves. Stepping back to appreciate the bigger picture of our impact. Maintaining hope in the face of difficult situations. As healthcare professionals, "seeing the flowers" isn't just about personal well-being—it enhances our ability to: Cultivate empathy, seeing patients as whole people. Maintain our mental health, reducing burnout. Inspire colleagues and patients, creating a positive environment. Master your skills, but don’t forget to look up occasionally. The flowers are there, offering beauty and hope amidst our daily challenges. "The little things? The little moments? They aren't little." - Jon Kabat-Zinn
