South Africa’s 87.3% matric pass rate for the Class of 2024 is a remarkable achievement, yet it prompts an urgent question: What’s next for learners who won’t take the university path? With over 337,000 learners qualifying for university but only 202,000 first-year spaces available, thousands are left searching for alternatives. At Injini, we’re reimagining education pathways to provide inclusive and meaningful opportunities for African youth. Last week, we celebrated 25 years of UVU Africa—a journey defined by impact, innovation, and progress. From our beginnings as the Cape IT Initiative and Bandwidth Barn to becoming a Pan-African leader in tech innovation, UVU Africa has driven meaningful change. Through the exceptional work of our various business units, CAPACITI Injini UVU Bio and UVU Accelerate, we’ve secured over R1 billion in funding, supporting candidates, small businesses, and entrepreneurs across 16 African countries. As Ian Merrington, our Group CEO, noted: “We look to the future and realise the extent of the challenge we’re addressing on the continent—to grow the African economy and absorb the millions of young people entering the workforce by 2050.” We’ve captured the essence of this milestone celebration in a short video—showcasing the insights, and moments that made the evening unforgettable. This year’s Year-End Function was the perfect opportunity to come together as a team, reconnect over delicious food, and share in the excitement of a well-deserved break ahead. We had two special reasons to celebrate: the close of an incredible year across the UVU Africa Group and the milestone of our 25th anniversary.   The day was filled with heartfelt moments, from honouring those who’ve been with us since the very beginning – some for an extraordinary 24 years – to celebrating this year’s award winners for their dedication and achievements.   As we look ahead to 2025, we carry the momentum of this year’s achievements and a shared commitment to building on 25 years of impact. Last night, we celebrated an incredible milestone—25 years of impact and innovation with UVU Africa, Africa’s first tech incubator. The celebration was not just a reflection of the past, but a vision of the future we are building together with our incredible partners and collaborators.   An evening brimming with energy, connection, and inspiration, guests experienced a unique, interactive exhibition showcasing the journey of technology—from the early 2000s to the advancements of today. Virtual tours of our UVU Bio Lab spaces offered a glimpse into the transformative work we’re doing in the bioeconomy. The official programme kicked off with a celebratory toast to 25 years of innovation, led by Alderman James Vos Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth   The highlight of the evening was a dynamic discussion led by Marietjie Engelbrecht, our Chief of Staff, alongside Group CEO Ian Merrington and our founding members Raven Naidoo, Board Member of UVU Africa, and Joshin Raghubar, Board Chair. Joshin and Raven shared insights into the origin story of UVU Africa, reflecting on the successes and challenges they faced while navigating the tech landscape from 1997 onwards—a time of great change and immense optimism.   “Our journey is one of bold innovation, collaboration, and a deep belief in the potential of Africa. The next 25 years will see even greater strides in empowering the youth, advancing technology, and driving impact across the continent.” – Ian Merrington   As we celebrate this momentous achievement, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting and transforming the lives of young Africans across the continent. Our goal is to empower them to thrive, not just survive, as we create opportunities that drive innovation and change.
