Excavation work for the US$2 billion underground extension of the Venetia mine in South Africa got under way in 2013, the year De Beers celebrated its 125th anniversary. The new underground mine is the biggest single investment in the country’s diamond industry in decades and is scheduled to begin production in 2022, climbing to full production in 2025. Over the course of its life, the underground mine will treat about 132 million tonnes of material containing an estimated 100 million carats. It is a new stage in the development of Venetia mine, which is the country’s largest producer of diamonds, extending its life to 2046.

Meet Nombulelo Mabiza, a Long Hole Drill Rig Technician at Venetia Mine. Nombulelo is the first female Drill Rig Technician who qualified to operate the Rhino 100 mobile raise borer machine in Sub-Saharan Africa! The primary application of the Rhino 100 is for the drilling of production slots, the machine has also been used to establish escape routes to ore passes and connections between tunnels. Nombulelo’s responsibility is to ensure that the metres drilled are achieved in a safe manner that meets both quality and production targets. She is also passionate about safety and sharing the skills that she has acquired in the last 14 years across various mining industries with her colleagues at Venetia mine.

As part of our Social and Labour Plan (SLP) commitments to better the lives of people in our host communities, Venetia mine, through the support of implementing partner, LIMA, has revitalised the Semakaleng Food Processing Co-operative in Blouberg’s Driekoppies village. Under the LIMA programme, Venetia mine has funded an array of resources to the Co-operative, including a 120m borehole with two water-storage tanks, a broiler production facility and two 500-cycles of production, three-phase electricity connection, peanut butter production and processing machinery, as well as agricultural and business training. It was a pleasure to host De Beers Global Ambassador and Academy Award-winning actress, Lupita Nyong’o, in South Africa and Namibia last week, where she experienced first-hand the positive impact that natural diamonds create for the people and places they come from. Lupita Nyong'o toured our world-class operations at Venetia mine in South Africa and visited the Namibia Diamond Trading Company (NDTC) and Namdeb in Namibia, meeting our colleagues working across the value chain and seeing how De Beers Group’s activities contribute to the wider sustainable development objectives of our partner countries. She also visited our 32,000 hectare Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve, which provides a protected habitat for diverse flora and fauna in South Africa, and the #BeFree Campus in Namibia, a youth facility that provides reproductive health services and skills training. Reflecting on her trip, Lupita said: “I’ve had a relationship with De Beers jewellery for a while now and I was very curious to go to the source and experience the journey a diamond makes first-hand. It was a pleasure to meet with people working in South Africa and Namibia’s diamond industries, and I was especially struck by the female staff who are breaking barriers and having real success in a sector that has traditionally been the realm of men. It was illuminating and inspiring to meet women from the surrounding communities who occupy and thrive in technical roles, as drill operators, geologists, and engineers. “I have come to this region to observe and absorb for myself what diamonds are doing for people here and I have already witnessed how much more there is to their story. Our team at Venetia Mine, in partnership with our contractors, made meaningful contributions to our community this Mandela Day. We donated 200 blankets to Blouberg and Musina Early Child Development centres, elderly centres, and drop-in centres. Our contractors also donated mats to an Early Development Centre in Musina and provided food packs. Together, we honored Mandela’s legacy by spreading warmth and care. #MandelaDay #MakeLifeBrilliant

To create a fully autonomous mine, we have made significant strides in our autonomous mining roadmap, which is an integral part of the underground expansion at Venetia mine. We have partnered with Sandvik, who manufacture the iSeries range of intelligent automated mining machines, which can be operated underground within access-controlled safety zones. We are currently utilising the LH517i, a high-capacity Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) to load and transport excavated material in confined spaces. Ultimately, our people will operate the loader remotely from our Integrated Operations Centre on surface. We have also seen that this loader is more productive than traditional techniques when measured in terms of output against available operating time, especially during a shift change over. The LH517i has been optimised for use with AutoMine®, a robust mining automation system for increased safety and productivity, the loader takes optimisation further with OptiMine®, a powerful suite of digital tools for real time visualisation, analysis, and optimisation of mining production and processes.
