The nights may be dark and gloomy, but don’t let that dampen your spirits.

1. The Withies Inn, Compton
Located in the tiny hamlet of Compton, The Withies Inn dates from the 16th century and has been unobtrusively modernised to accommodate an intimate restaurant.
With the low ceilings and timber framing, guests instantly feel like hibernating as soon as they step through the door.

2. The Anglers, Walton
Right on the banks of the River Thames, the gastro pub dates back to 1864 and features a popular seafood menu.
In the winter the pub is filled with the smoky warmth of crackling log fires.

3. Running Horses, Mickleham
The Brakspear Pub reopened on November 14 after a major refurbishment, which has given it a more informal and relaxed atmosphere, while retaining the traditional features that give the building its unique charm.

4. The Wotton Hatch, Dorking
The pub has three log fires burning during the winter and plenty of nooks and crannies allowing visitors to enjoy a quiet chat, as well as the main open plan bar and restaurant area with views out to the hills.

5. Onslow Arms, West Clandon
Casual enough to be comfortable and smart enough to feel special, in the winter a real fire is lit next to squashy sofas and armchairs which are so deep you could easily nod off.

6. The Parrot Inn, Ockley
This truly traditional inn, with its low ceilings and flagstone floor, keeps the country pub atmosphere alive.
In winter the huge brass fireplace crackles with logs and is a welcoming sight after a crisp walk through the Surrey Hills, and carefully chosen cask ales beckon as you glance around the bar.

7. The Bee Pub, Windlesham
A traditional English pub and restaurant set in the quiet village of Windlesham, the pub boasts soft intimate lighting and a roaring open fire, when the weather is cold.

8. The Four Horseshoes, Chobham

10. The Skimmington Castle, Reigate
The Skim is a great place to re-fuel after a good walk in the surrounding countryside and woodland.
Dating from the 17th century, it adheres to the concept of a traditional rural pub with open fires, good food, real ales and a warm welcome.

11. The Ramblers Rest, Coulsdon
The traditional pub building has been stylishly refurbished to make it the perfect place to find a cosy corner and take time out while enjoying some seasonal dishes and a selection of wines, ales and lager.

12. Swan, Ash Vale
Historically a military tavern, the Swan is now a charming - and popular - traditional pub restaurant next to Basingstoke Canal.
Part of the Chef and Brewer pub chain, you will find lots of home comforts at the village inn including a crackling log fire, wooden beams and of course an extensive range of tempting hearty meals.

13. The Pheasant at Buckland, Buckland
One fire simply isn't enough for The Pheasant, which has three indoors, including its fire pit in the restaurant, as well as a fourth outside in the form of another fire pit.
So when it's chilly outside and the fire is going you can still enjoy the outdoor views and keep warm.

14. The Well House Inn, Mugswell
With an oak-soaked public bar, lounge and conservatory area it is a regular stopping point for ramblers and dog walkers.

15. The Old House at Home, Dormansland
Instead of an open fire, this little pub, which had a major refurbishment in 2017, now has a double-sided log burner, which means you can enjoy its heat from the snug on one side and the bar area on the other.

16. Botley Hill Farmhouse, Warlingham
You could just imagine the family sitting around the big farmhouse style table in front of an inglenook fireplace in which sits a wood burning stove, blazing away.
Botley Hill Farmhouse also has a second smaller, but open, fire in the farmhouse itself, and out in The Sheep Shed tearoom is another wood burning stove.

17. The King and Queen, Caterham
This cosy old building with lots of character and serving real ales has two real fires, one at each end.

18. The White Bear, Fickleshole
The white-washed Grade II listed country inn nestled away in the tiny hamlet Warlingham has three real fires to warm up in front of.
