#InFocus 🌍 A mapping of labour migration pathways across the 27 European member states is now available, under the research project “Re-thinking approaches to labour migration. Potential and gaps in EU Member States’ Migration Infrastructures”. The project mapped labour market needs and analysed the national migration systems of all EU member states between early 2023 and early 2024: 📌 The research is packaged into 27 concise summaries and corresponding infographics. 📌 An online tool is available to visualise pathways by country or cluster information for multiple countries based on common criteria such as language, labour market quotas, and income. 💡 Common criteria such as language proficiency, labour market quotas, and salary thresholds apply to nearly 300 pathways into the EU-27. 💡 Key sectors for labour migration in EU member states include construction, healthcare, agriculture, tourism, transportation, manufacturing, and ICT. 💡 The twin transition in the green and digital sectors is expected to drive growth and heighten demand for skilled professionals. Ralph Genetzke, ICMPD Brussels Mission Director, shared: 💬 “We hope these products will prove useful for all, especially for practitioners, private sector and professional associations designing labour mobility schemes; and policymakers or researchers wishing to exchange knowledge on this topic. We encourage active engagement and sharing within your networks.” Looking ahead to #MigrantsDay 🔗 Discover more at: https://lnkd.in/dtJcsfmy 🔗 Explore the online tool at: https://lnkd.in/d6nYK-CJ 🤝 The research project was funded by the European Union and commissioned through the ICMPD-led Migration Partnership Facility. #PolicyInsights 📝 This autumn, a new cohort of global talent has once again arrived in the EU: international students. At a time of significant labour shortages across Europe, there are several advantages to recruiting international graduates from local universities. To better tap the talent that international students can bring, key actors should come together and start earlier to make staying a real possibility. 📝 In the latest #PolicyInsights piece, Caitlin Katsiaficas explores how recruiting international graduates can help address Europe's dearth of labour. She highlights the role of universities, employers, local economic development actors, and governments in facilitating the move from the classroom to the workplace. Featured Publication of the Month 🎯 Political parties that use migration as a rallying piece in their platforms have become more prominent, building on the narrative of increasing irregular migration - but, how fit is the available data on irregular migration for policymaking? A new policy brief suggests there has been no definitive change in the number and share of irregular migrant population in Europe since estimates in 2008. 📌 It highlights the need for policy-makers and policy stakeholders to be more cautious in treating the data used to describe irregular migration trends and populations. 📌 It also flags new developments and innovative methods to estimate the irregular migrant population being tested in the MIrreM - Measuring Irregular Migration project and elsewhere. The study was authored by ICMPD experts Maegan Hendow and Martin Wagner in collaboration with Jill Ahrens, Myriam Cherti, Denis Kierans, Albert Kraler, Arjen Leerkes, Lucy Leon, Alejandra Rodríguez Sánchez, Lalaine Siruno, Jasper Dag Tjaden, and Carlos Vargas Silva.
