👉 Day 2️⃣ of our Thematic Meeting in Mombasa, Kenya, continued to address the 4Ps of combating trafficking in human beings and smuggling of migrants - #prosecution and #partnerships: Day 2️⃣ ➡️ Concrete initiatives - We explored the latest data on concrete initiatives against human trafficking and migrant smuggling, presented by the Joint Valletta Action Plan Follow-up Team (ICMPD). ➡️ Prosecuting evolving crimes - We discussed how legal mechanisms can effectively adapt to new developments and trends. ➡️ Strength in unity - We reflected on how to leverage partnerships to combat trafficking and smuggling. 🤝 Thanks to the co-hosts, Kenya and Austria, and to all speakers and participants for their contributions to this fruitful meeting! 👉 Day 1️⃣ - Adaptive, innovative responses are needed to address the evolution of different forms of trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants. Under this premise, key stakeholders are currently gathered in Mombasa for a meeting co-hosted by Kenya and Austria, as the Khartoum Process celebrates its 10th anniversary of addressing trafficking in human beings and migrant smuggling. Day 1️⃣ - Focus on #prevention and #protection: ➡️ An inspiring keynote address by Ayla Bonfiglio, PhD of the Mixed Migration Centre (MMC) on the evolution of migrant smuggling and exploitation in recent years. ➡️ Expert input and discussion on innovative awareness-raising strategies to prevent emerging threats in human trafficking and migrant smuggling. ➡️ A World Café where participants met with NGO representatives to discuss how care, rehabilitation and legal protection are evolving to meet the needs of survivors in the face of evolving challenges. 🤝 Thanks to the co-hosts Kenya and Austria, and to all the speakers and participants! A decade of dialogue lies behind us and we have come a long way since the establishment of the Khartoum Process in 2014! Let's reflect on the milestones and achievements of the past 🔟 years: ❇️ The Khartoum Process was inaugurated in November 2014 by countries along the migration routes between the Horn of Africa and Europe at a Ministerial Conference in Rome, Italy. ❇️ The Rome Declaration, signed during the conference, laid the foundation for this initiative and focused on combating human trafficking and smuggling of migrants. ❇️ As migration dynamics evolved, so did the scope of the Khartoum Process. This expanded scope demonstrates the Process’ adaptability to changing realities and its commitment to tackling interconnected challenges comprehensively. ❇️ Now, the Khartoum Process aligns with the five priority areas of the Joint Valletta Action Plan (JVAP) and beyond. ❇️The Process has served as a laboratory for developing new ideas, approaches, and best practices in migration governance. ❇️Regular workshops and meetings equip member states with tools to address challenges like climate displacement, border management, countering human trafficking and facilitating safe and legal migration pathways. ❇️The formal and informal nature of the dialogue has provided a unique space for trust-building, networking, and partnership development among its members. ❇️Its rotating leadership underscores the sustained commitment of member states to the initiative. As the Khartoum Process enters its second decade, it remains focused on addressing emerging challenges. Looking ahead, the Ministerial Conference in April 2025 will be a pivotal moment, expected to shape the initiative’s future priorities and operational focus. Today we celebrate a significant milestone! The 🔟th anniversary of the Khartoum Process! And we have a big announcement about the future of the Dialogue: ➡️ Just as the Khartoum Process was established 🔟 years ago at its 1st Ministerial Conference in Rome on 28 November 2014, the future of the Dialogue will be significantly shaped by the upcoming ✨ 2nd Khartoum Process Ministerial Conference ✨ , which has been confirmed to take place in Cairo on 9 April 2025! It will be an opportunity to celebrate past achievements and set future priorities. Over the past decade, we have: ✅ Strengthened cooperation between countries of origin, transit and destination along the migration routes between the Horn of Africa and Europe. ✅ Enhanced capacities to combat trafficking and smuggling of migrants, as foreseen in the Rome Declaration adopted 10 years ago. ✅ Expanded the thematic scope of the Dialogue to a comprehensive approach to migration, in line with the priorities addressed under the Joint Valletta Action Plan (JVAP) and beyond. 🤝 This journey has been possible thanks to the commitment of our partners and stakeholders who share a vision of a safer, more sustainable migration framework.
