🌍 Sierra Leone, a country of 8 million people, faces significant energy challenges, with only 26% of the population currently having access to reliable power. But there is hope on the horizon, driven by the determined leadership of H.E. Julius Maada Bio and the guidance of global energy champions like Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, the first CEO of SEforALL. Their efforts have created a robust web of international partnerships that include IRENA, IAEA, IFAD, the World Bank, GIZ, Africa50, UNDP, UNOPS, the European Union, Germany, Denmark, the UK, USA, and Ireland, all committed to supporting Sierra Leone’s journey toward sustainable energy.
Being back in Freetown to present the Energy Transition and Green Growth Plan, developed in collaboration with stakeholders across the country, was truly inspiring. It’s moments like these that give profound meaning to our work when tangible progress is visible on the ground.
Key SEforALL Achievements in Sierra Leone:
🔋 Electrifying Healthcare: Through the Sierra Leone Healthcare Electrification Project, funded by the UK Government (FCDO), six major hospitals now have reliable solar power. This initiative, launched in December 2023, has reduced dependence on diesel generators and improved patient care. By March 2025, 12 more hospitals and 25 community health centers will benefit from this life-changing project.
👩🔧 Empowering Women in STEM: Our STEM Traineeship Programme is equipping young women with the skills needed for careers in sustainable energy. So far, 23 women have been supported, gaining hands-on experience by helping install rooftop solar systems and contributing to Sierra Leone’s energy transition.
💡 Scaling Mini-Grid Solutions: The Universal Energy Facility, a results-based financing initiative, is driving mini-grid investments in Sierra Leone. To date, 2 out of these 7 projects have been commissioned, benefiting more than 400 homes and businesses.
🤝 Advancing Policy and Investment: With SEforALL’s support, an MoU was signed in August 2024 between the Ministry of Energy and mini-grid operators, outlining critical measures to enhance the decentralized renewable energy (DRE) sector. This includes tariff-setting approaches, fiscal incentives, and improved customs processes to accelerate projects.
📈 The Path to 100% Electrification: The newly developed Sierra Leone Energy Transition and Green Growth Plan outlines a bold vision. By 2050, approximately 4.5 GW of hydropower and solar capacity will be needed, requiring an estimated $39 billion in investment but promising significant economic and social benefits, including thousands of new jobs.
To all partners and stakeholders: Let’s continue this important work and invest in Sierra Leone’s sustainable future. A huge thank you to the Government of Sierra Leone for their leadership and partnership. Together, we are making change possible. 🌱💡
