Harnessing Carbon Markets for Africa's Development
About us
The Africa Carbon Markets Initiative (ACMI) is an initiative sponsored by SEforALL and The Rockefeller Foundation with a mission to accelerate the growth of high-integrity, equitable, and transparent carbon markets in Africa. As an initiative, we focus on realizing climate action and delivering environmental, developmental, and economic benefits for society by promoting carbon markets. ACMI is a non-partisan advocate that provides strategic advisory services and convenes market actors to catalyze change for African carbon markets. ACMI fosters collaboration for increased integrity, equity, and transparency while championing African interests by advancing a positive narrative on carbon markets. ACMI supports governments, project developers, and communities through direct support and tools for effective regulation and high-integrity supply. ACMI also acts as a central point of reference on the state of African carbon markets and assembles market participants to build joint momentum around the path forward. ACMI complements these efforts by advocating for all forms of high-integrity carbon markets (compliance, voluntary carbon markets, and international trading under Article 6), moving toward securing commitments and closing transactions.

🌍 Key Messages from ACMI at the Green Claims & Carbon Market Event🌍 The Business Alliance for Climate Action (BACA) recently hosted an insightful session on Green Claims & Carbon Market: A Framework for Transparency to Support Europe’s Path to Net-Zero. ACMI CEO Paul Muthaura had the privilege of attending, and here are some key takeaways: 1️⃣ Support Diverse Market Types: The past two years have emphasized the importance of advancing all carbon market types—Voluntary, Article 6, and Compliance Markets—not just VCMs. 2️⃣ Leveraging Standards for Integrity: As the Green Claims Directive evolves, incorporating lessons from refined ICVCM and VCMI standards will enhance the credibility of market information and claims. 3️⃣ Beyond CO₂ Reductions: In Africa, socio-economic benefits often outweigh the CO₂ impacts. A transparent and equitable price of carbon credits that factors in these benefits is essential. 4️⃣ Carbon Pricing as a Catalyst: An appropriate "price on carbon" is vital for driving emissions reductions. Demand leaders must commit to paying premiums for high-integrity, high-impact projects. 5️⃣ Complementary Mechanisms: Carbon credits are essential for addressing hard-to-abate sectors. Proper pricing will ensure a focus on abatement innovation rather than just offsetting emissions. 6️⃣ Rising Prices & Market Convergence: As prices increase, regulatory and compliance signals will become critical for sustaining demand in voluntary markets. 7️⃣ Africa’s Unique Role: With its low transition costs, abundant renewable energy, and skilled workforce, Africa is uniquely positioned for emissions reduction. However, emphasis on removals may overshadow the value of reduction and avoidance credits. 8️⃣ EU-Africa Synergy: Optimizing complementarity between EU and African markets is key to promoting high-integrity credits that drive green growth and socio-economic development. 9️⃣ Community-Centric Nature-Based Solutions: Credible community engagement, benefit-sharing, and fair pricing are critical for the success of nature-based solutions.
