The publication is the newest release from the VET National Data Asset (VNDA), established by Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) in partnership with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The VNDA data reveals impressive outcomes for VET graduates, showcasing significant progress in income, employment, and reduced reliance on income support. Key highlights include: • VET graduates experienced a median income uplift of $11,800, with the highest gains seen in First Nations graduates (+$13,000). • Employment rates also rose, with 84% of VET graduates employed after training, a 15-point increase. • Around 8% of graduates pursued higher education, and 16% advanced to a higher-level VET qualification. • Notably, 39% of graduates who previously received income support are no longer reliant on it two years post-graduation. The Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) Roadshow highlights key national priorities shaping Australia's skills, education, and workforce. JSA's Better Together Report drives change through 5 key pillars and focuses on building a robust, more connected skills ecosystem. JSA provides advice that aims to: ✔️ Increase diversity, with a focus on women in apprenticeships (currently just 10%) ✔️ Prioritise mental health, flexibility, and fair pay ✔️ Address workplace health risks and support healthy work practices. JSA provides advice on migration, higher education, and VET to inform current and future skills needs. This approach forms the foundation for creating a more integrated national skills system that better addresses Australia's future workforce needs. Trevor Gauld facilitated the panel session. We are delighted to have collaborated on the release of CRC TiME’s new report exploring gaps in mine closure education and training. It’s the culmination of a research project seeking to address the impact of mine closures Australia-wide. 💡 New report reveals large gaps in mine closure education and training across Australia 💡 We're delighted to share the final report for Project 5.5, 'A strategic review of education and training: Mine closure and transitions': https://lnkd.in/gnFPGe9s. In collaboration with the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance (AUSMASA), the goal of the research was to identify the existing and future education and training needs of the mining sector, METS industry, and regional and First Nations Communities, Governments and Regulators affected by mine closures. The report recommends prioritising mine closure education and training. It found that: 🎓 while planning for mine closure should begin early, Australian-first research has found gaps in mine closure education and training for mining sector workers, regional and First Nations communities, governments and regulators. 🎓 only 13% surveyed had detailed knowledge of mine closure planning processes. 🎓 the top three priority areas of skills development noted by participants were: mine closure processes, risk assessment, and communication and engagement, including with First Nations communities. Meeting the demand for much-needed knowledge and skills requires new collaborations between industry, education providers, government and regional First Nations organisations. Building on investments to date, CRC TiME will continue to collaborate with organisations to develop up-to-date and accessible training to suit growing mine closure workforce requirements. Energy ministers across Australia are driving the National Hydrogen Regulatory Review to shape the future of hydrogen. They are developing National Hydrogen Codes of Best Practice, starting with hydrogen production and refueling codes. The Codes focus on an adaptive approach to regulatory reform to provide: • improved safety and environmental protection outcomes • national consistency • transparent regulatory pathways • efficient regulatory approvals. The exploration and other mining support services sector workforce has steadily expanded to 78,000 from 41,800 workers in 2019. Jobs and Skills Australia Employment Projections anticipate a further 8% growth through 2033, which would see the workforce grow to 86,400 workers. The sector relies on specialised occupations, such as geologists, geophysicists, metallurgists, mining engineers, and hydrogeologists. These occupations, also identified as critical clean energy occupations, are forecast to grow by 22.5% over the coming years. Technological innovations in the mining industry are rapidly changing, which could be the workforce driver attracting new entrants. Drones, more advanced driverless aerial vehicles, automatic spectroscopic scanning of drill cores, and automatic data processing are emerging technologies in the exploration sector. Did you know Australia's automotive manufacturing sector generated over $14 billion in revenue from over 3,000 businesses in 2022–23? The Jobs and Skills Australia employment projections forecast the industry to exceed 50,000 workers over the 10 years to May 2033. The 2023 Skills Priority List identifies half of the top 10 occupations in this sector as experiencing a shortage, including 4 out of the top 5 occupations. Key occupations for the sector include: -structural steel and welding trades -product assemblers -vehicle body builders and trimmers -industrial, mechanical and production engineers. Demand factors from the mining industry are helping to drive new automotive manufacturing opportunities. The sector is well positioned to support the local manufacture of electric vehicle components, including batteries, to support Australia's Critical Mineral Strategy.
