In late November 2024, Australia became the first jurisdiction in the world to implement what is now widely known as a ‘social media ban’ on children and teenagers under 16. The ‘ban’ has attracted global attention and sparked criticism from a range of stakeholders, including social media companies, the Australian Human Rights Commission, and a host of child safety experts and advocates. In the below article, Senior Associate Aparna Jayasekera and Dr Michael D. comment on the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024, explore which social media platforms may and may not be covered, and consider the numerous challenges posed by the new social media minimum age requirement. #BennettLaw #SocialMedia #PerthLaw #Perth
