💡 Thrilled to share the release of the Future Generations Policy Brief—a vital roadmap for embedding long-term thinking into Australia’s governance. It presents bold, actionable solutions to build a sustainable and fair future, including a Wellbeing of Future Generations Act and a Commissioner for Future Generations. The policy brief emphasises opportunities for climate action as a cornerstone of intergenerational fairness - such as investing in renewable energy and sustainable land use can help reduce long-term risks while strengthening communities, protecting Australia's biodiversity, and contributing to a thriving clean economy. Importantly, the report highlights the value of Indigenous stewardship and intergenerational knowledge in shaping these solutions, offering a path to ensure Australia meets its climate commitments and supports those most affected by environmental and social challenges. I’m proud to have contributed in a small way to this landmark report, through Better Futures Australia. Huge thanks to Foundations for Tomorrow.org and the Intergenerational Fairness Coalition for leading this important work, which reflects years of research, cross-sector and multi-stakeholder collaboration, and dialogue. This not only marks a milestone in intergenerational advocacy but also sets the stage for the next phase: turning these recommendations into tangible policy outcomes. Australia: we need to talk about the urgent need for a Clean Commodities Trading Company to advance Australia’s green superpower ambitions. As Oliver Yates and I argue in The Mandarin today, a Clean Commodities Trading Company would deliver massive and connected economic, environmental, and strategic gains for Australia: https://lnkd.in/gY7DBK_P Specifically we argue: "As a model for sophisticated green energy statecraft, the creation of a Clean Commodities Trading Company would demonstrate Australia’s commitment to smart, collaborative policymaking designed to maximise national security, comprehensively conceived. Specifically, the CCTC would enable Australia to seize the green superpower opportunity, deliver massive and connected economic, environmental, and strategic gains, and set a global example of how nations can work together to tackle the challenges of decarbonisation. By establishing a government-owned CCTC, we can lead the world in clean commodities, secure our green superpower status, and ensure a prosperous, sustainable future for generations to come." The cost climate of inaction is staggering, but the opportunity for the transition is even greater. Delaying the renewable energy transition could cost Australia $6.8 trillion over the next 25 years, with households bearing the brunt through skyrocketing insurance and living costs, find economic modelling by IGCC. Without swift action, climate change could deliver a 14% annual hit to GDP by 2050. But there's a huge opportunity: Transitioning to net zero by 2050 could save over $230 billion while lowering costs for households and businesses, boosting job creation, and unlocking Australia’s clean energy potential. If Australia harness our sunlight and mineral resources, we could become a renewable energy superpower, sell clean products, like green iron, to the world and decarbonise around 10% of global emissions. The message is clear: Staying the course on climate action is not just essential—it’s economical. Read more about why climate action pays off: https://lnkd.in/dyfD2THw

So what are NDCs and why do they matter? Nearly 200 governments have committed to publish upgraded national climate plans or NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions) by February 2025. These plans are our last chance to set the world on a sustainable path and protect the people and places we love. Find out more about NDC's and the Mission 2025 launch in Australia https://lnkd.in/g8tHg_dV #ClimateSolutions #NDCs #climateleadership #mission2025 Global Optimism
