📑Melbourne Climate Futures is inviting you to their 'COP 29: The Wash-up' webinar on 4 December at 12pm AEDT 🌏. Register | https://lnkd.in/e3XYdXcC #COP29 in Azerbaijan provided some progress on global #climateaction, particularly climate adaption finance. Many critics from developing and small island nations argue, however, that it was not enough. Negotiations were contentious at this #UN climate conference, and seemingly obscure to those of us following from abroad. University experts Jacqueline Peel, Janine Felson and Kate Coleman, who were on the ground for the negotiations in Baku, will provide their insights on what moved global climate policy forward, what held it back, and where that leaves our climate goals moving forward. #MCF #ClimateFinance #UNClimateConference #ClimateEducation #ClimateActionNow #JustTransitionNow

As we near the midpoint of this pivotal decade for climate action, Pacific communities are living with some of the most severe climate impacts, despite having contributed the least to the crisis. Oxfam's ‘Seizing the Moment: A New Climate Finance Goal That Delivers For The Pacific’ report highlights the urgent need for Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand) to commit to more ambitious climate finance to support a #JustTransitionNow. With #COP29 concluding last week, this is a timely opportunity to demonstrate leadership in supporting those most affected. Full report | https://lnkd.in/gXEPsDQx Some key recommendations listed in the report include: 🌱Australia should meet its fair share of the USD 100 billion climate finance goal with AUD 4 billion annually and commit an initial AUD 100 million in new funding to the Loss and Damage Fund. All climate finance should be delivered as grants, not loans, and be additional to aid budgets. 🌱 Aotearoa should align its contributions with its fair share, between NZD 558–953 million annually, while directing new funding to the Loss and Damage Fund. 🌱Both countries should announce post-2025 climate finance commitments that align with the NCQG and ensure their domestic policies reflect a 1.5°C pathway, including faster fossil fuel phase-out and greater emissions reductions. COP 29 has come and gone, but the work of rebuilding trust and delivering on climate finance remains. It is time for us to act with urgency and solidarity. #ClimateActionNow #ClimateFinance #JustTransitionNow #LeadOnClimate

We had the pleasure of being in conversation with Fellows from the Indo-Pacific region yesterday as part of their six-week fellowship hosted by Melbourne Climate Futures. We talked about what needs to happen to engage meaningfully at all levels – especially with youth, to ensure climate actions are equitable and sustainable into the future. We feel so lucky to have learned so much, some key insights include: 🌱Youth must be consulted and want more opportunities to be in dialogue with decision makers and to make climate policies, but decision makers must also build and respect trust for future generations. 🌱Youth deserve and require access to evidence-based climate information about their futures. 🌱Climate action is seeded in the home, in families and in local communities, we must be open and adaptive to learn new knowledge and experience. We wish the Fellows an exciting next three weeks in Naarm and look forward to following their climate leadership into the future! #BeAmbitious #LeadOnClimate #Leadership #ClimateChange

It sounds like a broken record, but as #COP29 unfolds, a new investigation by climate campaigners reveals that over 1,700 coal, oil, and gas lobbyists have been granted access to the United Nations Climate Change Conference. Read more | https://shorturl.at/9YbXJ At the same time, The Guardian reports that leading climate policy experts—including former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, former UN climate chief Christiana Figueres, climate scientist Johan Rockström, and our founder and chair Al Gore—state that COP summits are no longer fit for purpose. The message is clear: fossil fuels and climate don’t mix. To achieve a just transition, we must remove fossil fuel interests from COP processes and outcomes and ensure a fair representation of those most affected by the climate crisis. #FossilFreeCOP #JustTransitionNow #COP29Baku #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #ClimateActionNow #BeAmbitious #EndFossilFuels

"Climate change and the rate of change in particular is probably holding some surprises in terms of the impacts that it has across Australia." - Dr Karl Braganza The State of the Climate report 2024, released by CSIRO and Bureau of Meteorology this week, serves as Australia’s biannual report card on climate. It reveals that the country has already warmed by 1.51 degrees since 1910, with ocean temperature rises surprising even scientists. We are already living in a new climate, facing a future that will be hotter, more extreme, and unpredictable. Read more | https://lnkd.in/g5A9Aqu Urgent action to cut ties with fossil fuels is critical. We urge the Australian government to take immediate and essential steps to safeguard our planet and to meet their fair share of the global climate effort. #ClimateReport #Australia #ClimateActionNow #ClimateChange #ParisAgreement #LeadOnClimate
