The rules of leadership: some are pearls of wisdom, others feel like outdated relics, feeling more like shackles than guides. So what happens when you dare to challenge the handbook and ditch conventional wisdom? From questioning constant inspiration and endless pep talks, to rethinking “disagree and commit,” in this article a handful of trusted business leaders share the so-called rules they’ve scrapped, why they scrapped them, and the alternative approaches driving their teams to thrive. Thank you, Dr Morley Muse (Co-Founder of DEIR.AI & iSTEM Co.), Juan Camilo Valencia (Founder of brainbot), Ryan Williams (Security Consultant at Spartans Security), Phil Slade (Workplace Psychologist and Founder of Switch4Schools).

We Are Our Stories Last Wednesday was a profoundly special day—not just for me, but for my family, friends, community, and ancestors. I was humbled and deeply honoured to be named among the 25 inductees for the 2024 Victorian Multicultural Commission Honour Roll. These awards recognise extraordinary Victorians and organisations for their contributions to multicultural Victoria. As I walked into Government House, I felt the presence of my late mum. I wore her wrappers, coral beads, and traditional attire, a tribute to her unwavering love and belief in me. I wanted her to see her baby girl standing tall, making her proud. It was a moment filled with nostalgia—remembering my late parents and late sisters—but also immense gratitude for the present. I was surrounded by my future: my dear husband, Eli Muse who postponed his trip to San Francisco to stand by me; my remaining and only sister, Dakorim Briggs CFE, MSc my friend-turned-sister and business partner, Dr Ruwangi Fernando and my first son, Shaun. Seeing Shaun witness the ceremony was everything. I wanted him to feel inspired and to know that his dreams have no limits. For me, this honour is a reflection of a journey—one rooted in service, resilience, and advocacy. At iSTEM Co. and DEIR.AI the work Dr Ruwangi Fernando and I do is for all women in STEM, but I’m acutely aware of the compounded biases faced by migrant women. Every day, I use my voice to shine a light on intersectional diversity and to advance equity for all women. I’m immensely proud to have contributed to the progress of multicultural Australians through iSTEM Co. DEIR.AI and the many organisations that trust me to drive change, including Women in STEMM Australia, Science & Technology Australia, Jemena, Diversity Council Australia Ltd RISE Panel, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering Elevate Panel and Wyndham City Council One of my proudest moments was co-delivering the Diverse STEM Women in Wyndham Report, a project that amplifies the voices of diverse women in STEM including migrant women. It was an honour to celebrate the day alongside inspiring leaders such as the Governor of Victoria, Professor The Hon. Margaret Gardner; Premier Jacinta Allan; Minister Multicultural Affairs Ingrid Stitt ; VMC Chair Vivienne Nguyen ; and other ministers and community champions. I was especially delighted to be inducted alongside my friend, Fabiola Campbell 🇻🇪Until the End 🇻🇪 whose work empowering migrant women continues to inspire me. To my fellow inductees—congratulations! To the leaders tirelessly working behind the scenes to create a multicultural Australia—I see you. Your efforts matter. For all of us who have crossed seas to make this beautiful country home, may this be a testament to the possibilities that await when we come together to advance Australia fair. Here’s to many more milestones and victories for us all. #MAE2024 #VMC #MulticulturalAustralia

I won something! Last night was the Startup Daily’s Best in Tech awards night, in which I was nominated for the Industry Champion award. I have to admit, I did not think I would take this home, it has been a very challenging year for me professionally and personally, and I’ll admit to not being able to show up every day as my best self, especially of late. I’m not big on awards, but to have been nominated for this, and not to apply, feels pretty special. It adds a spring back into my step, and pushes me to continue to bring my best ideas and creativity into my work every day! Thank you to the whole community of The Startup Network , we love you! Huge shout out to the amazing Ryan Burns for being my rock and a rock star! ⭐️ 🙌⭐️ We did it! Thanks to Simon Thomsen for hosting a brilliant night and for allowing me to say a few words! 😊 Craig Swann and DANIELLE SEYMOUR . This weekend, I decided to relax and see a movie. I always enjoy watching documentaries or biopics, so I chose 'Srikanth.' This film tells the inspiring story of a visually impaired man's dream to excel in science, overcoming obstacles against all odds to earn a scholarship at MIT and start his own company to create employment opportunities for people with disabilities. The movie is based on the true life story of industrialist and entrepreneur Srikanth Bolla. My favourite scene was in court when a principal told Srikanth to read a book, knowing he was visually impaired and couldn't see. In response, Srikanth handed him a book designed for the visually impaired using the Braille alphabet. The principal, of course, couldn't read it. Srikanth then explained that if education were built by visually impaired people and everything were written in Braille, it would be impossible for him or anyone else to read. He emphasised that he wasn't asking for a complete overhaul of the system but for a chance to be included in its design and be part of it. This, my friends, is what inclusion truly means. It is not charity. It is simply an opportunity to be involved in the design of a system so that it works for everyone. Srikanth was already a brilliant scientist, and the laws of science are universal, though spoken in different languages. He just wanted his language to be included and to be given an opportunity for his contributions to be felt. Our society is already diverse, filled with various talents from different backgrounds. When we have a system that encourages all these talents to thrive, everyone wins. #Inclusion #Diversity #Accessibility #STEM #Leadership
