Derbarl congratulates our Board Director, Professor Sandra Eades AO, on receiving the inaugural Tom Calma Award at the 2024 Oceania Tobacco Control Conference. The Award recognises Professor Eades’ leadership at a national level in Aboriginal research and her tireless work to achieve tangible improvements to the healthcare and health service delivery to Aboriginal populations across the lifespan that has challenged the status quo to advance equity and systemic change in tobacco control. It is another well-deserved accolade that Sandra has earned, and we are Derbarl proud. AHCWA (Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia) NACCHO Australia

There are more than 3 million unpaid carers across Australia. #NationalCarersWeek recognises, celebrates, and raises awareness of unpaid carers, shining a light on their resilience and sacrifice, and the profound impact they have on our communities. You can #ShowThemYouCare through any of these small, but powerful actions: 🔹Check in regularly 🔹Offer a break 🔹Acknowledge and appreciate 🔹Initiate support 🔹Encourage self-care At some point in everybody’s life, we will all either know, be, or need a career. If you or somebody you know is struggling as an unpaid carer, have a yarn with your healthcare worker at Derbarl Yerrigan to see if they can help you find support, assistance, resources, or direction! Visit carersweek.com.au and don’t forget to #ShowThemYouCare

There were had plenty of good laughs at the Derbarl Yarning Group - this week the team put on a Quiz activity that had our Elders thinking deeply on quiz answers - no phones or cheating allowed! We congratulate Aunty Dot and Aunty Kathy on winning the big hamper, Uncle Richard and Aunty Aerianne took home meat packs and Aunty Tanya and Uncle Rodney won vouchers. It was a great day, and we thank our Moorditj team for hosting the event. The Derbarl Elders meet every Thursday fortnight from 10 to 12; our next gathering is 24 October in the East Perth Conference Room. To find our more, call Kellie Kickett on 1300 420 272.
