Earth Observation Australia Inc
Industry Associations
An Incorporated Association for ALL people who collect and use earth observation data in Australia.
About us
EOA provides a coordinating point for all people in Australia using earth observation data (data derived from images collected using satellite, airborne or any other remote technology platform). We encompass research, private industry, government, education and non-government activities. This includes people working across all natural and built environments, spanning the earth’s atmosphere, terrestrial, aquatic, urban and marine environments. EOA was formed to enable anyone who collects and uses earth observation data to have a forum to share and discuss their activities, and define their needs for support from industry, academia and government. This is not a solely government - or industry - or research-focused group, nor is it a spatial-science special interest group. EO spans all disciplines and sectors. It provides an inclusive and collaborative platform to improve access to and use of earth observation data for Australia’s benefit.

We’re excited to share the seventh paper in our "Securing Australia Through Space" policy paper series: “The Case for ‘Space Mainstreaming’ to Advance National Priorities” by Australian Centre for Space Governance research fellow, Art Cotterell. This policy paper highlights how space technologies such as Earth observation (EO) can drive Australia’s economic, environmental, and national security goals. As outlined in the Intergenerational Report by the Commonwealth Treasury, major global forces—geopolitical risk, technological transformation, and climate change—require innovative responses where space capabilities play a critical role. Art introduces the concept of ‘Space Mainstreaming’, emphasising that space should be integrated across all levels of government policy—not confined to specialist agencies. This requires boosting space literacy and fostering interagency collaboration to maximise space’s potential for national benefit. Read the full paper to explore key recommendations, including establishing a Space Taskforce within central government and enhancing whole-of-government engagement through updated space policy documents such as the State of Space Report and the EO Roadmap. #spacegovernance #spacelaw #spacepolicy #spacesecurity ANU Institute for Space | InSpace Australian Space Agency Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet Crawford School of Public Policy ANU National Security College ANU Defence Institute Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Department of Industry, Science and Resources Tech Policy Design Centre United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet)

Hello Earth observation community! It is that time again… put your thinking caps on, our “Where Down Under” December challenge is here. This monthly challenge is your chance to flex your geospatial skills and guess where a satellite image was taken across Australia. This month’s image was kindly given to us by Craig Shephard from the Applied Agricultural Remote Sensing Centre (AARSC). Don’t forget to use the comments to tell us where you think this is, what we are looking at and why you think it is interesting. You can tell us as much as you like, or as little as you like. You can tell us where you think the location of the image is, or what satellite and instrument produced the image, what spectral bands were used to create it, if you have had experience on the area. Anything you think is interesting or noteworthy to share with others, we want to hear it. Unfortunately, we cannot offer you prize money, but we can give you credit and glory…. We will acknowledge the first person to correctly identify the image and may also recognise anyone who offers the most interesting bits of information. To give more people a chance, we may wait 24 to 48 hours before posting any replies or clues… Good luck and let’s see who’s got the sharpest eye in the industry! PS. North is ☝

Nice to see Earth Observation (#EO) getting positive airtime from one of the best VC firms globally, Andreessen Horowitz, when looking towards 2025: “Harnessing Earth Observation Data: The number of Earth observation satellites has doubled in the last five years, from 500 to over 1,000. There is more data than ever downlinked to the Earth, and it is easier than ever to access imagery (although it is still far too difficult). Sophisticated government and academia customers have devoted considerable resources to building tools that rely on Earth observation data to meet their needs. Yet commercial revenue in the sector still has not materialized in a meaningful way. The real commercial opportunity lies in developing verticalized products that use Earth observation as just one tool among many to address industry-specific needs. These products should actually solve practical customer problems — considering labor shortages, budget constraints, and other business challenges — rather than simply providing another analysis or dashboard tool. In the future, latent Earth observation data could enhance the work of every supply chain manager, urban planner, and first responder.” Millen Anand https://lnkd.in/gYNAgVMg Watch this space. 📢📢📢 Attention all those who use AERONET aerosol data! 📢📢📢 AeroSPAN (https://lnkd.in/gcPV4YcV) is a CSIRO network of CIMEL ELECTRONIQUE sun-photometers distributed around Australia that has provided valuable data for understanding aerosol since 1997. Since 2016, the primary function of AeroSPAN has been to contribute data to the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET; https://lnkd.in/gmeY7X5y). The AeroSPAN program is currently undertaking a review process which will determine the future of the network, particularly in light of potentially reduced resourcing available to run the network. The AeroSPAN team are seeking your expert input in understanding the importance of each site in the network, and how the data are being used. We thank you in advance for taking about 30 minutes of your time to complete this survey -> https://lnkd.in/gRTtMxPK Ruhi Humphries David Barker Melita Keywood Ian C Lau

It’s great to see frameworks like this that make EO use cases more understandable to a wider audience. Simplifying complex data and concepts is crucial for increasing EO’s impact across different sectors. We’re always excited to see new approaches that spark dialogue and help bridge the gap between EO specialists and end users. Great work!

I created an Earth Observation use case framework that makes EO use cases easier to understand for those outside the EO bubble (investors, end users etc.), while also providing a structure for those within the EO sector for market positioning, product roadmap and GTM strategies. Our very own Joe Morrison had already put in some thought into this and developed a 3M framework for classifying EO use cases. This model works well for the EO sector, especially for companies developing satellite constellations. The 5M framework builds on his work, while approaching from the value of EO for the end user. As a tribute to Joe, I stuck with the 'M' naming convention - hence the five Ms. The goal here is to make EO use cases more approachable and create a starting point for discussions, especially when I advise EO startups, develop GTM strategies for EO companies, perform commercial due diligence studies for investors and assess the EO strategies for end-users. But, as I always do, I also wanted to share it with the community. Let me know if you have questions or any feedback on this model! For more analysis and insights on EO, subscribe to the TerraWatch Space newsletter.
