The Sunshine Coast Biodiversity Report 2024 is out! We loved reading about these things: 🌿 The Sunshine Coast area is rich and biodiverse with 19% of all native plant species in Queensland found within this Local Government Area (LGA) 🌿 57% of the LGA is vegetated 🌿 The extent of native vegetation across the region has increased by 5113 hectares between 2020 and 2024 🌿 A large proportion of the increase in native vegetation extent is on Land for Wildlife properties We are concerned about these things: 🪰 There are 133 threatened native plants and animals in the region 🌲 Remnant native vegetation has decreased by 842 hectares 🪻 There are several regional ecosystems which are critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable A part of the Sunshine Coast Biosphere, there is much work to be done to protect, enhance and restore biodiversity in this region. Hinterland Bush Links is working to become part of the solution to address threats to biodiversity. Weed species increase competition and can take over landscapes, destroying native vegetation. This is incredibly harmful for native biodiversity and reduces critical food and habitat resources for our wildlife. This is why we targeted invasive weeds as part of our Koala Habitat project.  To improve your property for koalas, target the following weed species:  💐 Lantana (Lantana camara), forms thickets on a broad scale which prevents small mammals and marsupials from being able to move across the landscape for resources  🍃 Broad-leaf Privet (Ligustrum lucidum, Ligustruim sinense), and Camphor Laurel (Cinnamomum camphora) are prolific woody weeds which can out-compete native vegetation for resources.   🌿 Native raspberry, (Rubus spp.) in disturbed areas, can act similarly to lantana and may need to be selectively minimised when it is in excess.  Want to find out more about treating invasive weeds? Join our Roving Restorers team or come along to one of our education events.
