Should you use a proprietary or open-source AI model for your newest application? That’s an essential question for healthcare organizations looking to adopt AI. My latest Code to Care video is the first in a two-part series to help you evaluate both options. Let’s start with the basics. Organizations like OpenAI and Google run proprietary AI models within their own environments. Your application sends data to the proprietary model, which processes the information in its environment and returns a response to yours. These organizations guard the structure of their solutions under lock and key — they’re money-makers, after all. Open-source models offer a local approach. You can download and run these models within your environment, saving you from sending data outside your organization. You can also fine-tune these models to suit your needs. That’s not always an option when using someone else’s code. Caveats: Open-source models may demand hefty server power. And they aren’t always as advanced as their proprietary cousins. Tune into the next part of this series, where I’ll look at strategies for ranking proprietary and open-source models.
