Today is Human Rights Day. This year’s theme, 'Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now', calls for urgent action. Human rights empower us to build a more inclusive, equal, and sustainable world.
Globally, one in five people have a disability. Yet, barriers in work, study, and daily life remain all too common. Equal rights and opportunities are fundamental.
For people with disabilities, this means:
- Breaking down barriers to accessibility
- Promoting dignity and autonomy
- Ensuring full participation in society
Australia has ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which applies a human rights lens to disability. We also have the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA). This promotes equal rights, access, and opportunity for people with disabilities.
Not sure what the DDA covers? Here’s a helpful guide from the Australian Human Rights Commission: https://buff.ly/4f8nexp
On this Human Rights Day, let’s reflect on how we can create a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
