Today is International Mother Language Day! A day to celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity. In Australia, 22.3% of people speak a language other than English at home. Of those people, 3.4% report difficulty speaking English, creating a challenge when trying to access information online. A common issue reported by our participants with barriers to literacy or reading disabilities is walls of text. When information is presented in a complex or overwhelming way, it can increase cognitive load, leading to frustration and difficulty completing tasks. Improve readability with these strategies: 1. Use page or section headings: Divide long pages into smaller, manageable sections with clear headings and subheadings (like this post). This creates a less daunting experience for all users. 2. Offer alternative formats: Consider providing information in other languages, Easy Read documents, or narrated videos. Research your target audience to determine the most helpful alternative formats. 3. Use visual cues: Images and symbols can significantly aid understanding and improve information findability. Include relevant imagery wherever possible. 4. Emphasise key points: Use bold text and coloured highlights to draw attention to key points. 5. Use bullet points: Break down walls of text into digestible chunks using bullet points. These simple techniques can improve the experience of all users and remove critical barriers for people with reading difficulties. Which of the following HTML elements is NOT a landmark: A) <body> B) <nav> C) <main> D) <aside> Well done. 77% of you got this right. The answer is A. Trivia Tuesday time! This week we're testing your brain on making best-practice accessible animations. Which of these features is not needed for an accessible animation? A) Pause/stop button B) 5 second run limit C) Audio-control D) Motion actuation The answer is D, Motion actuation. Motion actuation is when you can control an interaction by moving your device – like a shake-to-shuffle in a music app. And although you could use motion actuation for your pause or stop control, you'd have to provide a proper button as well!
