It’s Trivia Tuesday! Last week you said it was too easy. Well, here’s a more advanced question. 😉 Accessible names can be added to interactive elements in a number of ways. Did you know that there’s an order of priority? This means that one accessible name may ‘win’ over another if multiple are used. Knowing this order is helpful in creating predictable and identifiable controls for people with disability. Question: What is the accessible name of the following button?
Red T shirt
<button id=”cart-icon” aria-label=”Add to cart” aria-labelledby=”cart-icon product-name” title=”Cart”> A) "Cart” B) “Add to cart” C) “T shirt” D) “Add to cart Red T shirt” Take a guess in our poll or put your answer in the comments.

Trivia Tuesday is back for the New Year! Interactive elements can have a visible label that you see and an accessible name in the code that is provided to assistive technologies. If a button had a visible label of 'Apply', what should the accessible name be? A) Submit B) Apply C) Next D) Continue Answer: Most of you were correct! The answer is B) Apply. For any control to meet 2.5.3 Label in Name (A), its accessible name should at least contain the text in the visible label. It's even better if they are an exact match. This supports people using speech recognition software, so that the control name they can see matches the accessible name the software has listed for it.

This #AccessibilityTriumphThursday post goes to a company that has developed great accessibility resources and made them free. Intopia is an Australian-based accessibility consultancy creating a more inclusive digital world through thoughtful design, consulting, and tools. Their Figma Accessibility Annotation Kit is a fantastic resource for designers and developers looking to improve collaboration during the design handoff process. See it at https://lnkd.in/eH_4D4ae Using Figma to annotate accessibility choices ensures that key details such as color contrast, keyboard focus, and screen reader instructions don’t get lost. Embedding accessibility into design workflows makes it easier for developers to implement inclusive features and create better experiences for everyone. Creating accessible products starts with accessible design. If that is your goal and your organization uses Figma, check out Intopia’s annotation kit and enhance your collaboration and inclusivity. I recently completed the Intopia Making PDFs accessible online course. The course was challenging, rewarding, and a little confronting. Confronting in the sense that I began to realise that some resources that I have worked on over the years are not as accessible as I had thought. Accessible communication is an evolving space and so continuing to learn, develop new skills, and partner with experts and lived experience is vital. https://lnkd.in/g4ic_X6X #AccessibleCommunication
