Improving public health for vulnerable communities through global health research, education & inclusive development.
About us
The Nossal Institute for Global Health is multi-disciplinary team in the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne. The Institute is led by Professor Cathy Vaughan, a public health researcher with expertise in gender, violence prevention and health systems. Nossal works to strengthen the quality, affordability and inclusiveness of health systems in the Asia and the Pacific region through practical research, learning and cooperation. We use systems thinking to advance health equity, inclusion and sustainability. We seek to understand the operation of systems in the real world. We focus on the contexts in which they were designed and operate, explore both their intended and unintended consequences and consider how they can equitably and best serve the health of populations. Nossal Institute experts establish and extend the evidence base for strengthening health systems and extending universal health coverage to ensure access to health care and to promote well-being across our region’s diverse communities. We draw on academic and professional expertise from a broad range of disciplines, sectors and regions for our applied research, teaching and leadership Our specialist areas are: - Disability Inclusion for Health and Development - Education and Learning - Gender and Women's Health - Health Systems Governance and Financing - Social & Cultural Dimensions of Health Systems - One Health We support evidence building, capacity strengthening, applied research and evaluations, policy development and work in partnerships. The Comprehensive Rural Health Project (#CRHP) in Jamkhed, India has significantly & consistently improved health & development in the local community since the 1970s & is a model for #PrimaryHealthCare in low resource settings across India & globally. #NossalInstitute students have been in Jamkhed to observe and learn from CRHP’s approaches to #PrimaryHealthCare. During the 3-week residential course in Nov & Dec, students participated in small group activities & field trips with CRHP’s #MobileHealthTeam & #VillageHealthWorkers who are both essential to the project’s impact. Led by Matthew Reeve & Daniel Strachan, with support from Andi Halfpapp, students learnt directly from primary health care professionals deeply embedded in their communities. The fresh skills & perspectives gained will be invaluable in their future #globalhealthcareers. India is undergoing a significant #EnergyTransition. As India strives to achieve its ambitious #RenewableEnergy targets, ensuring the benefits of this transition are widely shared across ALL segments of society is key to improving living standards & economic opportunities across the country. Asian Development Bank (ADB) Sectors Group Energy & Human & Social Development Practice Team, in collaboration with the #NossalInstitute, have delivered an Inclusive Clean Energy solution conference for Indian policymakers and experts from energy sector agencies & ADB. The conference focused on the ongoing energy transition in India, as well as international practices relevant to India’s energy transition. #NossalInstitute’s Dr Reihana Mohideen, with support from Steph Lim, has played a pivotal role in shaping the event by serving as the principal advisor and conference chair. Her leadership ensured the event fostered meaningful dialogue, knowledge sharing, & actionable outcomes aimed at advancing #SustainableDevelopmentGoals. 🙏 Ajay Mahal & Pierluigi Mancarella for bringing their expertise & invaluable insights. Climate change is the single biggest threat to human health due to increased air pollution, extreme weather events, & forced displacement. A new Asian Development Bank (ADB) report explores the #OneHealth activities in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) and how these can be scaled up to address #ClimateChange, boost #FoodSecurity, and tackle #DiseaseResistance. #NossalInstitute’s team provided technical support to the project for scaling up and improving One Health work in the #GMS. We look forward to seeing the report insights being used in global initiatives on climate change and One Health Read the report 👉https://t.ly/T5qRT #ResearchImpact Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Angus Campbell Barbara McPake Clare Strachan

This #HumanRightsDay reminds us of the ongoing importance of equality, justice, and dignity for all people worldwide. The theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now”, highlights the continued relevance of disability rights in addressing global challenges. Central to the disability rights movement, culminating in the development of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), was protesting ‘against the service systems, medical professionals and social institutions that keep people with disabilities “captives of care”’. However, progress towards universal deinstitutionalisation for people with disabilities has been too slow. Together with Bhargavi Davar, the late founder of Transforming Communities for Inclusion (TCI Global), our advisor Aleisha Carroll from CBM Australia #InclusionAdvisoryGroup has prepared a call to action that details the ongoing struggle for the right to live in the community, as well as key actions that can be taken in Transforming lives: Deinstitutionalisation for people with disabilities 🔗 : https://lnkd.in/gKSwYepR. We share this in solidarity with the #WhatWENeed campaign - a yearly campaign organised and run by TCI, between the months of October to December. The campaign starts with the International Mental Health Week (10th October) and ends today with the Human Rights Day and focusing on Article 19 of the CRPD. Now is a particularly pertinent time to share this, with the recent release of the Australian Government's International Disability and Equity Rights Strategy (IDEARS) which highlights the importance of addressing the rights of people with psychosocial disabilities, and the ongoing segregation of people with disabilities in institutions. This publication is one of a series prepared under the DFAT – CBM Inclusion Advisory Group Disability Inclusion Technical Partnership, an Australian aid initiative implemented by CBM Inclusion Advisory Group and the Nossal Institute for Global Health, University of Melbourne.

#ViolenceAgainstWomenandGirls is a pervasive issue affecting communities worldwide. Compared to women without disabilities, women with disabilities experience higher rates of #GenderedViolence, additional forms of disability-based violence, a wider range of perpetrators, a broader range of settings of violence, and more severe consequences of violence. It is paramount that #VAW policy & programming is attuned to the experiences and needs of women with disabilities. Disability-inclusive VAW response services, primary prevention, and research must be prioritised to ensure no one is left behind. 'Eliminating Violence Against All Women and Girls' is an essay by #ProfessorCathyVaughan, Genevieve Walker & #JenHargrave produced as part of a series of essays were compiled by the Nossal Institute and CBM under the DFAT CBM-Nossal Partnership for the Provision of Disability Technical Advice and Services.
