  • Congratulations to Port of Townsville Limited for welcoming the largest cruise ship ever to dock in Townsville, a milestone made possible by the completion of the Port's upgraded shipping channel. Leveraging its prime coastal location and enhanced access, the Port of Townsville is set to strengthen its position as one of Australia’s leading import and export gateways. As Northern Australia’s largest container and automotive port, it leads the nation in exporting copper, zinc, lead, sugar, fertiliser, and molasses. The Port handles over 30 diverse commodities and serves as a vital hub for both defence and cruise vessels, driving trade, tourism, and regional connectivity. This achievement highlights the Port’s continued growth and its key role in shaping the economic future of North Queensland.

Today we celebrate the completion of the Port’s newly upgraded shipping channel with the arrival of Cunard’s luxury cruise ship, Queen Elizabeth, marking a major milestone in Townsville’s maritime tourism sector. To catch a glimpse of this magnificent 294-metre Cunard vessel and welcome its 2,092 passengers and 911 crews, the best location to do so is along the Breakwater Wall near the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre from about 6.30am. Please note there is no public access to Quayside Terminal on cruise days.

  • 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐑𝐃𝐀 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐬𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞 & 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 As 2024 draws to a close, we would like to thank everyone we’ve worked with across North and North West Queensland. This year has been one of progress, collaboration, and laying strong foundations for our region’s future. While challenges with workforce and housing persist, we are on the verge of significant economic growth. These challenges bring opportunities for innovation, and we’re excited about the possibilities ahead. A standout moment this year was receiving the 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 for “𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞.” This recognition reflects the success of our “𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭” project. Through initiatives like the Jobs Townsville & North Queensland Regional Jobs Committee, workforce expos, and the Growing Workforce Participation project, we’ve worked alongside industry, councils, and community groups to address workforce gaps and create meaningful opportunities for both businesses and job seekers. We will carry this momentum into 2025 to support our region’s continued growth. Our 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥'𝘴 𝘔𝘢𝘫𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 report, released this year, has been well-received by both government and industry, outlining key areas for developing and retaining the skilled workforce needed to drive the region’s many upcoming projects. Looking ahead, we’re excited to launch the 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐉𝐨𝐛𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐥 in early 2025. This platform will highlight why the North West is a great place to live and work, offering valuable tools for both businesses and job seekers. Strong partnerships have been crucial to our success this year. From local councils and advocacy bodies to industry leaders and regional groups like NQROC, North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils and the Northern RDA Alliance, these collaborations have driven tangible progress. Thank you for your support and dedication throughout 2024. As we approach the holiday season, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We hope you have the opportunity to rest, recharge, and spend quality time with loved ones. A shout-out to those working during the festive season, our councils, emergency services, retail, and hospitality teams, thank you! We look forward to continuing our work together in 2025 as we build on this year’s momentum and strive to make our region an even better place to live and work. Jobs Townsville & North Queensland today welcomed Trevor Gauld, Deputy Commissioner of Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA), for a collaborative roundtable discussion with members (both in person & online) of the JTNQ committee. As the Federal Government's independent authority on labour market insights, JSA plays a crucial role in shaping policies that support Australian workers and the businesses that drive our economy. JSA is seeking regional input into workforce and skilling challenges to help shape their priorities and the discussion provided a valuable opportunity for JTNQ members to outline the workforce challenges facing North Queensland. It was a great opportunity for our CEO Wayde Chiesa to present an overview of the region's workforce landscape, highlighting the impact of impending major projects and future workforce needs across the economy on workforce demands. The conversation explored critical training needs and pathways to ensure our region is prepared for emerging careers and future workforce requirements.
