The 2024 Energy & Mining Premier’s Awards were an opportunity to celebrate teams, entrepreneurship, innovation, communities and the people who make these milestones a reality. The Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP provided the opening address highlighting that the resources sector is the tip of the spear when it comes to economic growth. He noted that copper is a key commodity for decarbonisation and that South Australia’s uranium is helping other western democracies to decarbonise their economies. Further observing the importance of Santos Ltd & Beach Energy Ltd’s CCS Moomba project in our quest for Net Zero, the Awards night demonstrates the ingredients of a very healthy sector, and our industry’s continued pathway to prosperity. Congratulations to Botten Levinson Lawyers on 30 years of providing concise, strategic legal advice and representation in their specialist fields. SACOME was delighted to celebrate the milestone with their team, valued clients and stakeholders earlier this month where Jamie Botten and James Levinson spoke on their trajectory from a small, town planning-focussed practice established by Jamie in 1994 to James becoming partner and the growth of the firm to 22. They are immensely proud that three of their six Principals and 10 out of 16 legal staff are women and are also proud the clients they work for. SACOME celebrates their commitment to the South Australian resources sector and have valued their membership over the past four years.

Yesterday at SACOME’s Annual Lunch, our 45th year of member representation and advocacy on behalf of South Australia’s resources sector was celebrated and the theme of Constructive Disruption explored. Following the Welcome to Country by Karl Tamaru Smith, CEO Rebecca Knol launched SACOME’s 2030Vision, developed by the SACOME Council to accelerate the advancement of the SA resources sector. The vision will be delivered through constructive relationships with Federal and State Governments; nurturing an expanding pipeline of talent; environmental and social protection; the enhancement of positive industry awareness; and economic evaluation of growth opportunities. These deliverables will be supported by SACOME’s strategic advocacy pillars and sustained by our annual policy priorities. Rebecca also acknowledged Dr Paul Heithersay PSM, outgoing Chief Executive of the Department for Energy & Mining for his significant contribution to the South Australian resources sector. Alongside Ted Tyne and the late Barry Goldstein, Paul was influential in the creation of a standalone Department for Energy & Mining. In his opening address, The Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP highlighted that royalty revenues from our sector to the South Australian Government have reached a record of $422.5 million in 2023-24. Keynote speaker Gihan Perera delivered his interactive and entertaining Fit for the Future presentation, delving into the potential of AI, reframing it as augmented intelligence. He revealed that the most in-demand skill for future leaders is problem solving to keep customers and employees engaged. Gihan then interviewed two University of Adelaide graduates and Playford Trust Scholarship recipients, Allana Sagubo and Callum Martin spotlighting their insightful perspectives on AI and the roles they aspire to play in the future of the resources sector. An amazing night celebrating Santos Ltd's 70th at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre where partners, investors, suppliers and contractors that have contributed to the success of Santos over the decades were brought together. The South Australian Chamber of Mines & Energy has been proud to represent Santos since its establishment 45 years ago and was delighted to join the celebration. Santos is amongst the 10 oldest companies on the ASX and reflects the grit and determination of its founders and leaders over the past 70 years. While the last decade will be remembered for its successful string of mergers and acquisitions, this year’s historic Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) milestone lays the foundation for the evolution of the company from a pioneering oil and gas explorer to a global energy leader. The Moomba CCS project delivered in partnership with Beach Energy Ltd is one of the largest CCS projects in the world and the most cost effective. Kevin Gallagher reminded guests that while the world wants a faster energy transition, the harsh reality is that 1 billion people live in energy poverty and steel, cement and plastic are all dependent on hydrocarbons. Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP praised Santos for attaching themselves to the disruption resulting from the energy transition and owning it. Guests also heard from Jodie Hatherly, CEO & Director of the Santos Foundation which is changing lives in Papua New Guinea, Alaska and Timor Leste. The scope of the foundation and Santos' significant investment in the education and health of communications is to be applauded. In partnership with South Australian Chamber of Mines & Energy (SACOME), the Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP hosted a very successful Friends of the Resources Sector Parliamentary Forum Dinner at Parliament House, with guest speaker Kevin Gallagher, Managing Director and CEO, Santos Ltd. Kevin spoke about Santos' recently commissioned carbon capture and storage (CCS) project and the opportunities it provides for our state. In partnership with Beach Energy Ltd, Kevin emphasised that this project "is a first for Santos, it's a first for South Australia, and critically, it’s a first for onshore Australia in terms of large-scale CCS". With the ratification of the 2009 amendment of the London Protocol, Australia can now officially start working with other countries in the region to establish bilateral agreements to facilitate international CCS projects. SACOME calls on the South Australian Government to provide financial support for the construction of the pipeline from Pt. Bonython to Moomba to facilitate international carbon storage, and in so doing, further enhance the state's economic prosperity. CCS will be central to achieving the world's climate goals. SACOME is passionate about nurturing young talent to ensure that we create a workforce equipped with the skills the resources sector needs in future for the prosperity of South Australia. Yesterday, the University of Adelaide for provided SACOME with the opportunity to engage with high school students attending Ingenuity - an interactive showcase of university student projects exploring real-life applications of architecture, engineering, science, technology, computer and mathematical sciences. It was fantastic to see the students' enthusiasm to learn about robotics, understand the importance of coding and AI to the resources sector, and leave the experience with a fuller understanding of the value of the South Australian resources sector to their everyday lives. This is a major focus of SACOME's ResourcefulSA Campaign.
