About us
Leprosy Mission Australia is committed to the empowerment of individuals, families, and communities affected by leprosy or at risk of the disease. Such people often suffer from lack of choice and are usually powerless to change their situation. Leprosy Mission Australia wants to help them enlarge their choices, and to encourage and enable them to take part in decisions affecting their lives. Leprosy Mission Australia's goal is empowerment, not dependency. Empowerment enables each person affected by leprosy to reach their potential as a full participant in their community, which gives them pride, dignity, and a sense of worth. In the end, we want to hear people say, “I've been cured of leprosy AND I am a valued and respected person.” Leprosy Mission Australia works in partnership with individuals and communities affected by leprosy in 29 countries worldwide, in order to restore and enhance human dignity, self-reliance, and quality of life. Leprosy Mission Australia does all of its work in and under the name of Jesus Christ. Over 2000 national and international staff work together to provide appropriate medical, educational, and other services to meet the many needs of people affected by leprosy. Leprosy Mission Australia concentrates its focus of work within India, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, Nepal, and Indonesia.

If you like cricket, India, Boxing Day, and/or solving global challenges, there might be something for you in this! Thanks Kylie Beach and Steve Waugh Foundation.
It’s Boxing Day in Australia, and that means television screens across Australia will be switched to cricket. 🏏 As any good Aussie knows, summer holidays only really start when the Melbourne test match is on the telly, and you’re tucking into a plate of Christmas leftovers. 😋 The Indian fans are a special lot—beloved by Australians for their passion and noisiness as they flood cricket stands wherever they are around the world. Of course, it’s no surprise that the same country that gave us Gandhi’s passion for nonviolence, Bollywood’s passion for romance, and Mother Teresa’s passion for service has also given us the world’s most passionate cricket fans. If there’s one thing Indians seem to know, it’s how to express their love. Read more from Kylie Beach here: https://lnkd.in/gvMErPpp #love #compasssion #leprosy #stillathing

Have a Bolly, Jolly Christmas and a Happy New Year! Australia’s Indian community will be celebrating in style this year, with “Bolly, Jolly Christmas” and New Year’s Eve parties taking place across the country in what promises to be the most colourful events of the holiday season. We’re also looking forward to seeing Indian cricket fans – a force to be reckoned with if ever there was one – at the summer’s cricket matches, beginning on Boxing Day at the MCG. What does this have to do with leprosy? FIND OUT more... Check out this article by Kylie Beach: https://lnkd.in/gSJRqmKH #india #leprosy #stillathing

A flesh-eating bacteria has been in the Australian news this week. Buruli Ulcer (BU) - a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD). The State of Victoria has confirmed over 300 cases of Buruli Ulcer so far this year. Recent cases in Bateman's Bay have sparked concern of the spread into the State of New South Wales. 🦠 In Nigeria, where BU is endemic, The Leprosy Mission Nigeria is partnering with a government strategic plan to control BU and eliminate leprosy by 2030. (Leprosy is also an NTD but unlike BU is not flesh-eating.) Together with The Leprosy Mission Australia, the Australian government is supporting the Enhanced Care for Integrated Skin NTDs project in Zamfara, Benue and Nasawara, in Nigeria. Thanks to the joint support of Australian supporters and the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP), this project works towards the elimination of Leprosy, Buruli Ulcers and Lymphatic Filariasis as a public health problem in 3 states in Nigeria. Our thanks to Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and ANCP for contribution to sector expertise. It's great to see The Leprosy Mission Nepal's participation in this Safeguarding Workshop, invited by the Australian Embassy in Nepal. 👍 #acnp #dfat #safeguarding #leprosy #stillathing
Thank you to the Australian Embassy for inviting us to be a part of the interactive workshop on Safeguarding. The session underscored the significance of safeguarding as a fundamental component of development, advocating for a framework that goes beyond compliance to foster environments that prioritize protection, dignity, and respect for all individuals. 👏🏽
