A first in regional Australia, HealthiERSim®, an electronic medical record simulation system developed by Charles Sturt University is helping nursing students get real-world experience from the comfort of their classroom. HealthiERSim® enhances students' health digital literacy by providing a risk-free virtual environment to practise using digital healthcare tools and electronic documentation processes. “This technology prepares all our students for effective collaboration and patient-centred care in their future nursing roles,” Associate Professor Pauletta Irwin said. Researchers at Charles Darwin University are using a state-of-the-art nanofiber fabrication facility to create fibers that are 10 to 100 times thinner than a spider’s silk to solve some of the pressing issues the Northern Territory is facing. Nanofibers have an extremely high surface area-to-volume ratio which acts like a superpower, allowing them to deliver outsized performance in numerous applications. The fibers created from electrospinning can be used in bulletproof vests, filters for water purifiers, and medical equipment. “Kevlar vests and other protective clothing which our police and defence force wear are currently quite heavy and lack breathability, which is not ideal here in the NT,” Dr Naveen Kumar Elumalai said. “Utilising nanofibers will help to make the vests stronger without increasing the weight. This means that they will offer greater protection for wearers against things such as bullets and shrapnel without making them hotter, this is for sure a win-win. Edith Cowan University, in collaboration with UNSW, University of Adelaide, University of Technology Sydney, University of Canberra, and University of Newcastle will collaborate with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration to study lightning and fire from the ground, air and space. The research data collected as a part of IGNIS mission will be used by scientists and fire investigators around the world. "We are using space technology to study thunderstorms, the lightning strikes that result in fires which in the Australian landscape can be devastating and deadly," ECU School of Engineering, Executive Dean, Professor Paulo de Souza said. Edith Cowan University Centre for Precision Health (CPH) is calling on the Western Australian community to support the development of NeuroHub WA, a world-first health platform that will support the more than one million Western Australians living with a neurological condition. The NeuroHub WA prototype was co-developed by the CPH, neuroscience research institute Perron Institute, and impact partner Anthologie, in collaboration with people living with neurological conditions, healthcare experts, researchers, and not-for-profit industry leaders.
