A drizzly morning in Alexandria didn't dampen the spirits of our team at the official opening of the Bourke and Bowden precinct.  The ceremony was attended by tenants, consultants, and artist Guan Wei who created the garden sculptures. A Welcome to Country by Uncle Allan Murray made note of the earthy tones of the development and the abundant garden setting as a positive addition to the neighbourhood. Central to the Bourke & Bowden precinct is a courtyard, a centre of gravity and a lively green threshold to the commercial activities within this new neighbourhood. Providing a sanctuary from the noise of the street and an addition to the broader public domain, it provides an open-air extension of the workplace and ground level retail offerings. With a dynamic façade rich in shades of terracotta and umber, Bourke & Bowden recalls the character of Alexandria’s manufacturing and industrial past while also looking to its future.  Time and Place @hickorygroup Openwork Pty Ltd Flack Studio Urbis @Guan Wei

We’re excited to reveal that Wardle were successful in winning three awards at the 2024 National Architecture Awards in Adelaide on Thursday evening. River’s Edge at the @University of Tasmania was well received winning the Daryl Jackson Award for Educational Architecture. Burnt Earth Beach House won two major awards – the Emil Sodersten Award for Interior Architecture and an Architecture award in the Residential (New) category.  It’s always heartening to be recognized for the effort and outcome of our work. We’re fortunate to work with some of the country’s best creators, alongside ambitious, intelligent clients and collaborate with hardworking project teams which makes for compelling architecture. These achievements is shared with them all. We're grateful to the juries for their reflection and consideration. @Australian Institute of Architects

James Loder is presenting two Wardle projects at the World Architecture Festival this year. Bendigo Law Courts is a project we are extremely proud of, breaking new boundaries for us and setting a new standard for community justice delivery. Burnt Earth Beach House combines innovation, collaboration and an absolute understanding of its setting - it's also a visual feast! Both are terrific projects and we're so delighted to be among the shortlisted projects in Singapore this year. Go well Jimmy! @worldarchfest #WorldArchitectureFestival

The Shed at University of Tasmania forms a new interface between the city of Launceston and the campus establishing a strong sense of arrival, and an inviting place to be. This is a building that we’re extremely proud of, and the commission to design three buildings at Inveresk is a once in a generation opportunity to contribute to regional education. Within the two wings of The Shed are two strands of inhabitation, one for students, staff and learning and the other for labs and research. The Shed supports the future of science and health in the region. The purpose-built facilities are for in-person, interactive learning experiences and research connected with industry. The building’s form recalls the proportions of Inveresk’s many 19th century railway buildings. Sitting between these sheds is a courtyard-like atrium, and a vividly rendered pathway supports wayfinding and binds both sheds and occupants together creating a lively interior.  Formally opened on Friday 18th of October, dignitaries from all levels of government attended the ceremony to celebrate the culmination of the Northern Transformation Program. Our appreciation goes out to the extended project team on a successful collaboration.

Following our introduction to Fareshare during Melbourne Design Week and making a contribution to their Meals for the Mob program, a group of us recently volunteered at their Abbotsford kitchen. Rosie gave us an insightful briefing on Fareshare's current contribution to those doing it tough in our community and the cost of keeping Fareshare running. Some eye opening numbers. We had a great time packaging and prepping vegetables, in our fetching hairnets. Here's the finer details of our contribution: • Sealed a massive 2157 x 400g single serve meals, ready for freezing and distribution. • Chopped 130kgs sweet potatoes and 80kgs pumpkins ready to add nutrition and colour to meals • Laid out 80kgs of tomatoes onto oven trays ready for roasting • Broke apart 10 boxes of mushrooms ready for chopping Thanks for having us @fareshare_australia

The Victorian Heart Hospital has been awarded Australia’s top property honour at the Property Council of Australia’s Innovation & Excellence Awards, named the Australian Development of the Year 2024, for its stunning heart-themed design and innovative construction. Australia’s first state-of-the-art specialist cardiac hospital, nominated by John Holland, also took home the award for Best Public Building. Director of the Victorian Heart Hospital and Monash Victorian Heart Institute, Professor Stephen Nicholls congratulated the team who designed and built the hospital. "It's a privilege to provide world-class healthcare and undertake world-leading research in the Victorian Heart Hospital," said Professor Nicholls. "While we hope our extensive efforts to prevent heart disease will reduce the risk of an emergency visit to hospital, there is an amazing facility ready to support those who need life-saving care." Property Council Chief Executive Mike Zorbas said the project represents the property industry at its best: innovative, community-oriented and a model of design excellence. “The Victorian Heart Hospital, designed as a “hospital-in-a-park” with a distinctive weathered steel façade and heart themed design elements, is a glorious winner,” Mr Zorbas said. “This hospital is a vitally important piece of social infrastructure for Victorians. The John Holland team can be justly proud of this flagship community asset.”

Wardle partner, Meaghan Dwyer is presenting at TEFMA24 in Auckland today with Rowan Maclean from the University of Melbourne. 'Partnerships & Precincts' will focus on the opportunities the built environment can create for collaboration to expand research and learning ecosystems.  Reviewing two Wardle life science projects, the Victorian Heart Hospital and Australian Institute for Infectious Diseases, “there’s huge potential for these innovation precincts to deliver a range of benefits to the local communities they serve, as well as those beyond“, commented Meg.
