  • This is great news! This Summit will kick off the much-needed conversation of tax and transfer reform, one of the key Principles - Predistribution- of a wellbeing economy!

CEO of Think Forward, economist & geographer, designing economic and tax systems for sustainable, shared prosperity.

One for the diary! ✏️ There is broad acceptance that our tax system is broken. It denies the creation of an Australia grounded in shared prosperity on a healthy planet where we can invest in the services we value. In response, Australia’s community sector, led by Per Capita Australia, is coming together to host a multi-day summit on meaningful tax and transfer system reform and build the case for change. The tax system underpins our society, so there is a lot at stake. It's critical that our voices are heard in these debates - so please do join us! Honestly, just look at all the organisations involved - it's so good. The summit is for everyone, whether you’re a grizzly old tax veteran or a novice who just wants a better Australia. There’ll be expert panels alongside those with lived experience and interactive sessions where we can all have our say. The first three keynote speakers have just been announced, and they are some of my absolute favourites - Dr Ken Henry, Dr Katherine Trebeck and Professor Miranda Stewart. I’ll even have a chance to say a few words about the work we are doing at Think Forward. The event page can be found here: https://lnkd.in/efE-uwwj We’ve tried to make in-person ticket prices affordable, and a cheaper online option is available. If the ticket prices are a barrier, please do get in touch with me. It’s very important that younger policy practitioners and those with lived experience can attend. Finally a big tip of the hat to Emma Dawson, who has done a mountain of work over the past month spotting a need, organising an event and bringing together so many incredible partners so quickly. Incredible effort.

  • Overconsumption is everywhere, and it's being discussed on everything from Netflix documentaries to the growing push to better regulate fast fashion. We enjoyed the Oct episode of The Financial Diet where she talks about 'Why Nothing You Buy Feels Good anymore': https://lnkd.in/gpgyDEc3 What podcasts, videos, books or other content on the topic of overconsumption would you recommend for people interested in a wellbeing economy?

Have you seen 'Buy Now' on Netflix yet? It was only recently released and is currently in the Netflix top 10 and well worth your time. A really accessible and eye-opening look at what capitalism/growthism/consumerism is doing to the planet, and how the current market and growth-based approaches to solving our ecological crises can't work. Also an interesting insight into the minds of people who work for the multinational corporations responsible for most of our ecological and social damage and how they now seek to repair some of the damage they feel responsible for. A great documentary to watch with people who may be new to these issues, or who may be (consciously or unconsciously) trying to avoid acknowledging the harm we, collectively, are causing with this way of life. It's a short-ish film at less than 90 minutes. If you've seen it, please do let me know what you think in the comments below. #buynow #amazon #apple #Adidas #degrowth #capitalism #growthism #consumerism #greenwashing #corporationscantbegreened #massextinction

  • Wellbeing Economy Alliance - WEAll’s Katherine Trebeck on the closing panel of the 7th OECD World Forum in #Wellbeing in Rome this week. How fantastic to have WEAll represented on the centre stage. Have you been following along? Do you have any great takeaways to share?

View profile for Romina Boarini, graphic

Director of the OECD WISE Centre at OECD

Grateful to Gary Gillespie, Pedro Conceição, Katherine Trebeck, Francois Bourguignon for joining me on the last stage of the 7th #OECD World Forum on Well-Being. Thank you for your insights on how to sustain the Beyond GDP momentum, and to make our collective efforts more meaningful and powerful.   Four key areas especially call for important attention:   🔄 In economy, we must shift our economic policies and strategies towards ‘triple-win’ solutions that benefit people, the planet, and prosperity, placing equity and sufficiency at the core.  📊 In data, it’s time to innovate and open our data collection and communication processes to ensure information is more timely, granular, and meaningful for people. 🌍 In climate action, let’s turn the climate crisis into an opportunity for impactful change, aiming for the breadth, urgency, and fairness needed for a true green transition.  🤖 In AI, we need swift action to harness AI’s potential responsibly for human well-being, while ensuring it doesn’t deepen inequalities or introduce new risks.    💡 Well-being begins now, and only through unified efforts we can harness our collective potential to make a meaningful impact, enhancing well-being for everyone today and for generations to come.   #sustainability #AI #Climateaction #Data #triplewin #wellbeing #OECDForumWellBeingRome2024

  • Wonderful article by The School of Life on the failures of the way we (don't) learn about the economy, and the economic debate. "Lying awake at night, for instance, some of us may wonder, in a sincere and yet inarticulate way, why it is that the world built by capitalism is not (bathos intended) nicer. "Why is there still so much suffering all around? Why do some have so much and others so little? Why are most jobs mindless? Why can’t there be more security and leisure? Why do anxiety and fear persist almost everywhere? Aren’t we destroying the planet for no particular reason or reward? (By this time it may be getting very late, and only a stubborn few will continue to press on..) "Couldn’t we start again in some new way, rejig things, perhaps pass some laws and experiment with bold new ideas in order to create a freer, less anxious, happier world?"

  • I've interviewed Prof John Quiggin before and he has a rare ability to be an economist who a) explains things well and is enjoyable to listen to and b) calls bullsh-t while proposing genuinely good ideas. Really looking forward to this, pop it in your diary!
