Horizon Europe-Developing the next generation of open Integrated Assessment MOdels for Net-zero, sustainable Development
About us
DIAMOND will update, upgrade, and fully open six IAMs that are emblematic in scientific and policy processes, improving their sectoral and technological detail, spatiotemporal resolution, and geographic granularity. It will further enhance modelling capacity to assess the feasibility and desirability of Paris-compliant mitigation pathways, their interplay with adaptation, circular economy, and other SDGs, their distributional and equity effects, and their resilience to extremes, as well as robust risk management and investment strategies. This will be done via integration of tools and insights from psychology, finance research, behavioural and labour economics, operational research, and physical science. We will develop a transdisciplinary scientific approach to legitimise the implementation process and co-create research questions that stretch the frontiers of climate science, as well as establish vibrant communities of practice to transparently open model enhancements and to develop capacities, thereby lowering the entrance barriers to the established IAM community. The project started in December 2022 and is expected to run until November 2026.

🌍 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆-𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴? We’re excited to highlight the important work of Victoria Herbig, who recently completed her master’s thesis within our group. Her research, “𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘐𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺: 𝘈𝘥𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘕𝘦𝘵-𝘡𝘦𝘳𝘰 𝘚𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵,” explores how to make stakeholder engagement in modeling for evidence-based policy-making more inclusive. As part of the Horizon Europe-funded DIAMOND project, Victoria’s research advocates for an enriched 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 (𝗧𝗗𝗥) approach emphasizing 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 – ensuring that a diverse range of stakeholders, especially marginalized communities, are not just consulted but actively engaged in shaping 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 (𝗜𝗔𝗠𝘀) that inform net-zero sustainable development policies. 🔑 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀: Victoria developed a 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, to promote inclusivity, accessibility, and equity. This framework is centered around three pillars: 1. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Ensuring that a 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀, particularly those often underrepresented, are involved in the modeling process. 2. 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: Developing methods to maintain 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, ensuring all voices are heard and respected. 3. 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Moving beyond traditional consultation to 𝗰𝗼-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲, ensuring stakeholder feedback shapes the modeling outcomes. These pillars ensure that models are not only technically sound but also socially robust and aligned with equitable strategies for achieving net-zero emissions and sustainable development. By transforming how stakeholders are engaged, this research paves the way for more effective, inclusive, and relevant policies. 👉 Interested in learning more? Access the full thesis here [https://lnkd.in/eTDX5_gK] or reach out to Victoria Herbig directly for more information. Victoria would also like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the group members PD Dr. Bianca Vienni Baptista and Dr. Stephanie Briers for their invaluable mentorship and direct guidance throughout this research. Special thanks also to Prof. Dr. Reto Knutti for his overarching support and contributions, which greatly shaped this work. #ParticipatoryModeling, #IntegratedAssessmentModels, #Inclusivity, #PolicyMaking, #TransdisciplinaryResearch
